As of 05/03/07, the following 325 people are registered for the 12th Annual Illinois State Morel Mushroom Hunting Championship on May 5, 2007.
Stand-By rules are in effect. Walk-ons will be permitted only if space allows also on a first come-first served basis. The entry fee for walk-ons will be $5 additional ($30 ages 13 and up, $20 ages 12 and under. The stand-by sign up sheet will be available at 7:00 a.m. at the registration tables in the Hunt Building (see information below).
A note to the hunters: It is very difficult to to find a site that is large enough to accommodate such a large crowd, has mushrooms, and is owned by someone willing to let us lease it. We sometimes get a few complaints of the terrain being rough and some feel we should have warned them. You are hereby warned: mushrooms are were you find them, not where you want them to be, and not necessarily where you are looking!
The Hunt Site has STEEP RAVINES. Don't go down if you can't make it back up. BE CAREFUL!
We've lost hunters in the past. If you don't own a compass - buy one and learn to use it.
Basically, you need to look at it when you leave to know which general direction you are traveling.
When it is time to return, travel in the opposite direction.
The competition lasts two hours - EXACTLY. If you think you might not hear the 30 minute warning siren, you need to wear a watch.
If you are not familiar with Illinois' woodlands you will probably meet a monster called Multiflora Rose for the first time. She is one mean witch with lots of sisters equally as ornery. Actually multiflora rose is a plant that was imported by some government do-gooder to provide habitat for our creatures. Unfortunately, it has thrived here. One plant can cover several hundred square feet and be ten feet tall. The branches are like barbed wire except the thorns more closely resemble fish hooks. And she sometimes hides morels or covers the route to morels. Proper attire demands sturdy hiking boots, loose fitting pants made of heavy material, and a long sleeve shirt which should also be loose fitting. The loose fit is necessary because when you get hooked, the hooks will snag the clothing rather than skin. A sturdy hiking stick is also helpful to hold the branches away from you.
Please read the Competition Rules - "Mushrooms must be torn or cut above ground level. Any mushrooms showing signs of "root" damage shall be disqualified". Root damage means that there is dirt on the base of the stem and the mushroom has been ripped or dug out of the ground.

The people listed here are entrants to the 2007 Illinois State Morel Mushroom Hunting Championship. Remember, if you haven't picked up your packet by 8:45 on Saturday morning in the Hunt Building at the Marshall-Putnam Fairgrounds, your spot will become available to the standby list.
Instructions for Stand-By list: Check in at the registration tables and inform the personnel that you wish to be on the stand-by list. At approximately 8:55 we will have figured out how many no-shows there are and will release the spots to those on the standby list in the order that names appear on the stand-by list. The cost for walk-on competitors through the Stand-By list is $30 for ages 13 and up and $20 for ages 12 and under.
