Thanks to all reporters, we obviously couldn't do this without you. The success of the sightings page overwhelms us. Our purpose is to be educational and we're learning more than anyone! If there's anything we can do to improve it, let us know.
As a public service we post all reports of morels sightings that have been reported to us and leave them year-round as an unofficial, unscientific, undocumented study of the arrival of our favorite fungi. For now, please email reports, questions comments, or answers to Morel Mania If usage warrants, we'll turn it into a bulletin board with instant posting. Currently messages are posted by state in the order we receive them. We don't post complete names or email addresses because we don't want you receiving unwanted email from some group sending junk email (or following you into the woods!
Please DON'T send you reports in ALL CAPS.
Also, without giving away your GPS coordinates, try to give us a hint of location within your state - for example: north, south, county, nearest city, etc.

Alabama:
Sightings! Date: Sat, 24 Mar 2001 14:15:52 -0600. Hi Tom , First sightings from North Alabama near Huntsville. A transplanted cheesehead and a hoosier found a dozen black morels scattered over a couple of acres of woodland. This is a week later than last year. Dick C.

morel sightings. Date: Wed, 18 Apr 2001 12:24:54 -0500. From Caroline H. On our place, 14 of them, 7 April. North Alabama near Guntersville, Beeches Creek. On an old homesite place, near cedars.
Season Wrapup. Date: Fri, 20 Apr 2001 09:30:55 -0500. We had a good season, if not unusual, here in North Alabama.Lots of black morels, a few yellow/whites, and a large number of half-frees and a very unusual number of small grays very similar to what you would find around Boyne. Will be leaving within the week for North Central Idaho via Indiana. As I reported last year and, I suppose my comments were lost when your browser crashed, I found a good number of black morels in the area around Powell Idaho through about June 10. These were found at an elevation of around 3300 feet. Never found any at elevations higher than that. The first ones I found I raked out from under a picnic table in the Wendover campground. Until next year-Dick C
Alaska:
Found in Alaska! Date: Mon, 28 May 2001 17:38:29 -0800. About the Sightings, I have done morel hunting (true morel) in the past just off HWY12 at Oak Creek in the Cascades of Washington. It became an annual event. I now reside in Anchorage, AK. This is my first summer here. I did an annual camping trip Memorial Day Weekend with my husband and family about 155 miles north of Anchorage and to my surprise a family friend discovered a large area of the half-free morel (Morchella semilibera): This is the exception to the rule that morels have the bottom of the cap attached directly to the stem. The cap of the half-free morel is attached at about the middle. These morels generally have small caps and long bulbous stems although the ones I found range from 2-4" tall, six 4" tall with large caps, seventeen 2" tall large to small caps, five 3" tall large to small caps, and five just shy of 2" tall with small caps. I have pictures, which have yet to be developed of the mushrooms, location, and area. The total found on the trip May 25-27 2001 was around 100 in the area of about an 2 acres, 4-6% land incline, lightly shaded with very little or no direct sunlight, usually within a radius of 36" from the base of trees or rotten stumps. The ground was covered with 1/8-1/2 of leafs, moss and other foliage like a moist blanket leaving the morels nearly invisible. We sautéed some of these the first night with onion with butter and white wine and they were absolutely delicious! It was fascinating to me to find these in Alaska and with snow still on the ground in this region. I will be doing more research of morels and the different varieties of AK. Heather M

Arkansas:
Yellow morels found in central Arkansas, Date: Sun, 18 Mar 2001 21:37:02 -0600. I have recently returned today (3-18-01) from a trip to my favorite morel site in the Arkansas River Valley. I saw 15 false morels, ~gyromitra~ ~caroliniana~, young, medium sized, and 10 young yellow morels. I feel that the next two weekends will be good for the collecting of yellow morels at this site. J.J.
Arkansas morels. Date: Sat, 31 Mar 2001 18:52:19 -0600. Collected 7 half free morels after about 3 hours of searching near the Arkansas River. Then went to the White River Nat. Wild. Ref. and found 7 false morels. Had never seen them before. Thought at first, when I spotted them from a distance, that I was on to the mother load. It was soon apparent that I wasn't. But, never-the-less it was an interesting find. With temperatures quite low during the last week things apparently slowed down. Temps reaching near 80 during the next few days should speed things up. Buffalo knats and mosquitos are horrendous. Sightings were south of Tischnor AR, near the Arkansas River. The hunt is on, Jerry L.
update for Arkansas River Valley area. Date: Mon, 02 Apr 2001 22:53:14 -0600 Central Daylight Time. Saturday, 3-31, collected about 60 yellow morels, some were still young in age (gray), but all were medium to large in size. None were old enough to toss out. Sunday 4-1, co-worker collected 40 yellows at same site. Plans are to return to site this coming Saturday and collect again. My feelings are that the morels will be near the end of their fruiting in this area this coming weekend. Best to move north after the next weekend. J.J.
Morels. Date: Tue, 03 Apr 2001 20:54:22 -0700. Found 5 small white morels today in a yard in the City of Harrison, Arkansas. Northwest Arkansas in the Ozarks. Very dry here and need rain, temperatures are good, 70 - 80 just the past few days. Late to find the first ones here, usually around the 25th of March. Happy Hunting!! Love the web site! Jim H. Harrison, AR
Arkansas morels. Date: Mon, 09 Apr 2001 19:19:23 -0500. Went to an area near the Buffalo River over the weekend and found morels at the base of ash trees and a few black morels at the base of red oak. Most were on south sides of hills. Only found 23 black and yellow morels after about 6 hours of looking. Steep hills sure make you wish your legs were less than mid 50's year old. Then, on Saturday, looked for several hours around bayous in the Cache River Nat. Wild. Refuge and found none. Air temps are in the high 80's. Seems winter turned into summer too fast. Black flies, ticks and mosquitos certainly add to the price of those few shrooms, but, never-the-less they are delicious. Hope to get back into the Ozarks soon. With summer temps the season will probably end soon. Jerry L. Stuttgart AR
morel mushrooms Date: Sat, 14 Apr 2001 11:36:58 -0500. Hello! My name is Dave and I am currently living in Russellville, Ark., it's about half way between Ft.Smith and Little Rock. Went out looking for morels on the 11th and 12th, but no sign of any. Not as familiar with hunting locations here as I am originally from Ill. For the most part, I am told that they grow around ash trees here. I think it was a little dry yet as there was little folage on the ground. May apples were up but sparse and not blooming. There are a lot of leaves on the ground due to a late fall so I know they will be difficult to spot, especially the small ones. I have spoken to people who have found some, but I am not sure where to look again. Today is Sat. the 14th and we are getting a steady rain. Temp. is cool in the low to mid 60's. May warm to 70 or so, but it is supposed to be in the 60's and 50's for highs next week and lows in the 40's and even 30's. I'm wondering if it may be getting too late here? It looks as though you are more familiar with the states north of here, but was hoping you might have some info. that could help me. I am going to Quincy, Ill. in a week or so. Am tracking spottings up there as best I can to find the most optimum time to depart. Would appreciate any insight you might have based on the little bit of info. I have given you. Hope your response, if available, is not too late. Waiting anxiously, Dave in Pope Co. Ark... Dave, From the other Sightings reported for AR, I would think there are still plenty of morels yet to make their appearance. I would think that the next two weeks would be great for the Quincy, IL area also - depending on moisture and temperature of course.
Arkansas morels. Date: Mon, 16 Apr 2001 20:51:30 -0500. Found a few morels that were just coming up in the area 30 miles north of Hector, AR on April 14 and had a friend that found quite a few near Fayettville, AR too. With the rain that day and the next there should be a lot of mushrooms coming up in northern Arkansas this weekend. Cool weather this week should keep them around for a while. Happy hunting. Jerry L.
Arkansas morels. Date: Mon, 23 Apr 2001 19:45:21 -0500. Went to an area near Fayetteville where my friend found quite a few morels last weekend (not 4/21) and found very few morels. Most of what I found were very dried up. Probably the result of freezing weather that we had during the first part of the week.. My wife and I searched through several areas of the Ozarks between Fayetteville and Pelzer AR and found few and those appeared to have been dried or frozen. My general impression is that the season has passed most of Arkansas unless you are in the far northern par of the state and on the north slopes. The variation between freezing temperatures and temperatures in the 80's and the infrequent rains seems to have reduced output this year. Hopefully next year will be better. Jerry L.
British Columbia, Canada:
First morels. Date: Sun, 22 Apr 2001 12:27:58 -0700. From: vitalsys. British Columbia, Ca. Okanakan. Beautiful blacks in valley bottom.
Morels in Northern British Columbia. Date: Sun, 27 May 2001 08:41:38 -0700. At long last we are beginning to find a few early spottings of black morels. The season here, as has been stated by many in your reports, is about 10 days later than usual. The temp here has not been very cooperative as we have had frost overnight until mid May with day time highs only reaching low 50's F. However, the last 5 days have had highs of 70 F to 75F with lows around 40F to 45F which is slowly encouraging morel growth. We anticipate a good season over the next 3 weeks. Al D., Prince George, British Columbia, Canada
California:
Sighting, Date: Sat, 3 Mar 2001 14:23:53 -0800, From: Liz. I live in Madera, California which is located in the central part of the state in the San Joaquin Valley. I spotted my first crop of black morels this morning in my front yard flower bed. About 35, ranging from 1 to 4 inches were growing in the garden bark that I had put down three years ago. I'm off to look for more, maybe in the backyard.
Morels in CA, Date: Sat, 03 Mar 2001 16:29:43 -0800, From: Darvin D. Found my first morels of the season today. 9 lonely, lovely morels under Incense Cedar. They were in Sebastopol, CA. (Darvin is a member of the Sonoma County Mycological Association)
from Deborah Y. N. Date: Fri, 13 Apr 2001 22:22:57 -0700. Hello. I found your website while searching for info about morel mushrooms. If you keep track of 'shroom sightings, I'd like to report that I have what I THINK are morels growing in my backyard in Temple City, CA. I've never seen morels around here before. I don't know where these ones came from. Perhaps from the redwood chips I used to smother the old lawn. Sincerely, Deborah
earlier! Date: Sun, 15 Apr 2001 11:22:20 -0500. On Jan 25, 2001, from Ann R. I will have to lay claim to the first Minnesotoan to find morels this season (as it will probably never happen again!) I just returned from Los Angeles. While there I was looking at new model homes of different builders. While walking up to the front door of a newly built house, I looked down at the fresh cypress mulch along the sidewalk in the shade of the entry way. There were 5 beautiful fresh golden morels, the largest about 4 inches high. The agent at the house thought I was nuts to pick them and said I could have all of them. I wonder how many people walked by them during their open house,. There had been a heavy rain and this was the darkest corner of the building outside. The weather there has all the plants fooled as the irises were blooming and most of the spring flowers started to pop out after an unseasonable cool spell
It's time! Sun, 22 Apr 2001 10:25:08 -0700. Hello, It's April 21st and we found about 12 yellows and a few blacks ----I live in northern Ca and we where hiking at about 3000 ft elevation, it just rained for 3 days and then it was about 70-can't wait to go back! Happy Hunting! Dave R
my first this year. Date: Fri, 4 May 2001 14:11:08 -0700. HIya, Found my first (only one so far) black morel in one of my dependable spots on the west shore of Lake Tahoe at 6300 feet this afternoon. I still await seeing brite red snow plants (Sarcodes sanguinea), leaves on the aspen trees as big as nickels and the occasional afternoon thunderstorm to really kick off fruiting. Jim
California Sierra Nevada follow up. Date: Thu, 17 May 2001 06:36:07 -0700. Hi Again, In my last sightings report I mentioned eagerly awaiting more bright red snowplants, aspen leaves as large as nickels and some rain to kick off fruiting. This has all happened in the last week! I visited my MOST dependable spot on the west shore of Lake Tahoe and immediately found five lovely black morels. My visit was cut short due to mother bear and cub in area. Beware the bear! Earlier in the week I also visited the extensive camping area to north of HWY 50 as far as Union Valley reservior (east northeast of Pollack Pines) and we found black morels at every location we inspected. We paid special attention to campground areas. Picked several dozen. Next week we will be visiting various spots along HWY 88 between Hope Valley and Jackson. A report will follow. Jim
Colorado:
Excellent site and info! Date: Thu, 19 Apr 2001 21:44:48 -0600. Hello All- Quick note to all of you from ol "Mountain Mel" here in Colorado-( land of very few if any morels). Thanks to Larry K.. in So. Illinois, ever once in awhile this ol home boy from Illinois gets to taste a morel !! I swear Larry can smell'm in the woods! Last year, my blue heeler dog , Mom and I did get to visit your gathering . Great! I did purchase some good items, t-shirts, books and all. Don't know if I can make it this year or not yet. May try some hunting near by in Kansas. Note- thought you may want to know that we/I have found only (2) morels here in Grand Junction, Co. at 6,000 ft. One was sort of freeze or air dried perfect and the other was in a flower bed of a neighbor--- in chipped aspen bark bedding. So- figure that- no elm trees? Q- Do the spore kits really produce morels? Ha- I have tried but--- no good. Guess we need that Illinois humidity! Meanwhile- Any of you in this area - call me up at 970-242-8507, stop by and I will show you some survival tricks if you tell me about morels! Sincerely," Mountain Mel"- Deweese, Ret. USN- SERE. Check our website at www.youwillsurvive.com Thanks for that plug in your newspaper story!
morels in Colorado. Date: Tue, 01 May 2001 14:53:19 -0600. Well, guess what, the morels made their annual appearance in Colorado right on schedule, April 29. We do not weigh ours and rarely measure them since they are uniformly tiny and generally few and far between. I wandered out to my patch on the Platte River under the cottonwoods, not really expecting to find any at all. I even had my binoculars around my neck not only as a bird back-up, but also as a disguise just in case I stumbled on something edible. And what to my wandering eyes did appear in a NEW Area but two lovely yellow morels at least two inches high. I continued wandering in ever widening circles checking old sites and adding new ones. At the end of 1 1/2 hours I was in possession of 70 lovely, delicious, fresh, unexpected treasures ranging in size from a miniscule 1 inch to a gigantic 2 1/2 inch monster. Most were not in their usual places. They were delicious. I thought at the time that this could be it for the year since we have had extremely hot, dry weather for the last two weeks, BUT there is a storm front with good moisture and cooler temps moving in tonight. So, as ever, hope springs eternal. In a good year with late April/early May moisture, we often pick extra large yellows up to 8 or more inches in mid-May until June. Good Luck to all, Ellen----Foray Chair Person--Colorado Mycological Society
Date: Tue, 15 May 2001 14:47:54 -0600. Last night at the regular meeting of the Colorado Mycological Society, I saw the largest yellow morels I have seen in 25 years of looking. Many were in the 1/2 lb category. Some came in from Boulder, north of Denver and the rest from around Colorado Springs--south of Denver, locations not at all specific for good reason. I have the fever once more and will walk my patch tomorrow afternoon with very high hopes that the season is not yet over. There is lots of moisture in the ground, but it has been quite hot and I think that hot soil is the death knell. Several nice blacks also came in from west of Boulder at 7000+ feet. Morelly yours, Ellen J.
Colo morels?!! Boulder?!!!!] Date: Fri, 01 Jun 2001 16:52:08 -0600. Dear Tom and Vicky, Indeed there are morels in the Boulder area, although I suspect the season has passed. One of our club members brought in a bagful ( at keast 20) large dried gold ones that he had picked along Boulder Creek under the cottonwoods. The meeting was the second Monday of May and they were about done for on that date. You might try attending one of the CMS meetings --- they are held on the second Monday of the month at the Botanic Gardens and begin about 7:00 PM. There are usually many kinds of fresh mushrooms on the table, a speaker is present, and you are welcome to attend free of charge. Membership if you join is 21.00 a year or something like that. I picked 140 in my own private place during the end of April and early May. Morelly Yours, Ellen

Sightings! Date: Mon, 26 Mar 2001 06:06:13 -0800 (PST). I found a couple of hundred in the flood plain of the Broad River Valley in Elbert County, Georgia on 3/25. They were all blacks. The only place I have ever found morels around here is in a flood plain. I haven't noticed any association with vegetation. I left the small ones to grow a few more days. The forcast is for lows in the 20s tonight. Will this hurt them? Tom R.
morel report #2. Date: Tue, 10 Apr 2001 12:53:38 EDT. Tom, sending a separate report. On the way driving north to the Knoxville foray, I stopped just north of Macon Georgia, and had a look in High Falls State Park. This, as you know, is extremely far south in GA. Many would never think they could be here. Well, it took me about 45 minutes, and I had found my first Morel, a small esculenta. It appeared to be the end of the season here. But I have documented proof now that they grow this far south! I found a total of 2 morels there. Sincerely, Chris M., Morel Mushroom Hunter's Club

Mushroom haven. Date: Wed, 18 Apr 2001 16:32:51 -0600. Hello, My name is Sandy we own a Inn in the Mountains of Idaho, our place is in the heart of where the Clear Creek Fire of 2000 was last summer and fall, ( the nations largest fire ) We had a Lady stop yesterday from Texas, She stopped to ask us about the fire area, because I guess the forest service don't like giving out that information to mushroom hunters, the Lady also said we will probably have a lot of people coming to this area in about two weeks, which give us a idea. We know this area like the back of our hand, all the roads, trails, what areas were burnt the hottest, what areas you can access and ones you can't. We are the only business in the area for about 50 miles, we have food, lodging and camping areas. We are going to put maps on Ebay under the heading of Attention Morel mushroom hunters. If you have any input, or know of any one that might be interested our E-mail is Cobaltsandy@home.com Thanks for your time, Sandy Johansen
Morels. Date: Fri, 27 Apr 2001 11:35:43 -0600. From: Hello from Idaho, Do you know of any map that shows areas in Idaho for mushrooming. We hunt all the time, but in the very same areas. We would like to travel a little and do some hunting in different areas of Idaho. We found our first bunch April 15 this year. Wow. Thanks, Cathy
Date: Mon, 30 Apr 2001 12:43:31 -0700. From: Dan B. Idaho!!! Found 8 M. Esculenta in northern Kootenai County growing in a pine bark mulched shrub bed. Has rained off and on for 3 days now... real steady all day today... should be a good weekend.
overflowing with morels. Date: Wed, 16 May 2001 15:32:09 -0700. dear sirs we have more morels this year than ive seen in 10 years i live in north idaho-and im looking for buyers can you help? b.thomas. There was a great article in USA Today on April 26 about the commercial buyers that would be throughout the Pacific Northwest. I would post it here except for copyright laws. You can buy a copy of it for less than $2.00. I think that if you check with the forest service in your area, they would know where the buyers are. The article said that the buyers are even using planes to locate the best areas.
Morel Sightings. Date: Tue, 22 May 2001 11:29:09 -0700. Morels are up in Southwest Idaho's Boise National Forest. We found about 50 black morels in about a half an hour. These were located west of Highway 55 about 1.5 hour's drive north of Boise. Over the past two or three weekends only false morels (Gyromitra Gigas and Verpa Bohemica) were showing up. There was rain about 4 or 5 days prior, so that may have helped. Good Hunting. ~~~Bret
IDAHO. Date: Mon, 11 Jun 2001 12:25:37 -0600. From: Ken G. Central Idaho Payette National Forest. June 10 burn areas. I picked gallons in 2 hours. A permit is needed to pick in burn areas. In areas other than burns they were very hard to find.
Illinois:
FIRST ILLINOIS MOREL! Date: Tue, 20 Mar 2001 20:12:32 -0600. Get your baskets ready. Morels are up in Illinois--Southern Illinois anyway--as of Tuesday, March 20. I located my first one of the season today, a black morel about 1-1/2 inches tall, on public land in Williamson County. It was a young specimen naturally, with small, almost-closed pits and considerable growth potential ahead. But growth potential is a meaningless term when describing the first morel. It always comes home with me. The entire hunt today required taking exactly three steps into the woods. Sometimes these things really do come easily. Last year I reported the first morel in Illinois to this site on March 14. That embarrassingly tiny creature last year I discovered by brushing away the leaf litter in one of my hotspots. The morel I found underneath the leaves was the size of a pencil eraser. Yes, that was cheating I suppose. But some of us weaker souls just can't wait. This year I played by the rules and waited for the first VISIBLE morel to show up among the leaf litter. This year, March 20 was the magic day. Did I look for others? Nope. Nothing more than a glance anyway. I hate crushing tiny morels with my footsteps as I walk all over a young patch. I'll let them grow. It'll be a week to 10 days before most of us will be able to make a haul of black morels in Southern Illinois. (Although I'm 50 miles north of Cairo--the absolute southern tip of Illinois--so adjust that prediction accordingly.) This was my first day out looking for morels this year. Nonetheless, I was so confident of the potential to find morels that I brought along my camera to document the first one. Three steps into the woods, and there it was, right on schedule. Click. I will offer one tip as a final note, then quit this egotistical bragging: It pays to keep annual notes to remind ourselves what memory doesn't accurately record. All of us pick morels, and all of us know approximately when to go out hunting for morels--approximately being the key word. But the majority of us aren't positive about when to find morels and ultimately spend too many anxious days and weeks in advance of the season, peering outside, wondering if there just might be--just maybe--a few morels up yet. I got tired of that. Nobody's got a perfect memory. I sure as heck don't. But my notes, which I've kept for seven seasons now, tell me exactly when to find the first morels. And yes, as a matter of fact, I do intend to be buried with those notes. Good luck Illinois morel addicts. Joe M.
morel trip south. Date: Mon, 02 Apr 2001 13:53:51 -0500. Hi Tom, Got back last night from our exploratory trip to southern Illinois. Spring is not as advanced as it was this time last year. No redbud or dogwood flowering yet. Not a lot going on in the way of spring flowers. Saw toothwort and a few spring beauties, some small mayapples, a few trillium, some small bloodroot, and yellow daffodils and Forsythia are in full bloom. There is red showing up in the maples, as their buds are breaking, but not the red and yellow green that was visible across the Ohio river as viewed from the Illinois side last year. Saw one fence lizard, no snakes, no toads, no box turtles, and no ticks. Spring peepers are chirping and softball size gelatinous spheres of developing tadpoles were seen in a small pond. Reading the landscape in the areas that I investigated, spring is probably a week or ten days behind last year at this time. All of that aside, I found my first morels of the season March 30, seven small black morels, about 2" to 3" tall. I found 12 more blacks at a different location on Sunday, April 1. Both sites were on south facing slopes. I visited several other areas, which regularly produce morels but found none. Saw no other apparent mushroom hunters, which usually is an indication that most people feel it's too early. The season has started; there is adequate moisture now and things should start to pop as temperatures increase. Perhaps, barring some 90 degree days, we are in for a more "normal" spring. Whatever that is. Darrell
1st of the season. Date: Tue, 3 Apr 2001 14:17:06 -0500. This is Monte, I found my first 21 tiny black morels of 2001 on 4-2. I had heard reports of others finding a few 7-10 days ago,but the below average temperatures have slowed things down. The rest of this week is forecast above average temps, so all varieties of morels should come on together.I hope everyone else here in Southern Illinois has a safe and productive morel season. I,ll keep you updated. Good Luck!
Morels found outside ST.LOUIS! Date: Wed, 04 Apr 2001 18:50:27 -0500. ILLINOIS 4-4-01. I only found two little black shrooms about 1" tall, but that is good
enough to get me back into the woods
Fri, 6 Apr 2001 20:28:56 -0700. I've been reading the articles on your web site. One that caught my eye talked about whether morels grow or not. I've had a patch in east central IL (Clark county) that I have been cultivating and experimenting with for the last five years. I had some last year that lasted for 3-4 weeks and grew from 1/2 inch to 8-9" tall. Covering them with a bucket or coffee can seems to work really well. I've also fertilized some with Miracid fertilizer (Miracle Grow high in acid for acid loving plants). At first I tried covering them with a jar but didn't see any change. An older experienced 'shroomer told me to use a bucket and it worked. I also have a farmer friend who has a neighbor that finds mushrooms every year 1-2 weeks before everyone else down in Crawford county. I've been keeping track of the dates. They are March 7, 1998: March 13, 1999: March 16, 2000; and March 18, 2001. Every year my friend brings them in to show me. They are usually 1/4 to 1/2 inch tall. He says they grow on a south facing hillside that has a spring underneath that helps warm the ground. Even more unique, the guy finding them usually predicts 2 or 3 weeks ahead of time the exact day he will find them. He's usually acccurate within 1-2 days. Something else I tried last year was a leaf blower to remove leaves that had built up. It doesn't seem to bother the morels but gets rid of excess leaves (might even spread spores?). Sure makes them easier to see! I burned off some of the patch this year and mowed some of it last fall. Now I'm anxiously awaiting this year's season. Good luck and keep the info coming. Jeff H. Magnolia Report.Josh and I went down in our valley on Saturday, 4/7/01. Checked the one spot where Tomi found a lone black morel last year and a spot where we find deliciosas (little greys with vertical ridges that don't get much bigger than 2"). We've had temps in the 80's all weekend with about 3/10's of an inch of rain. Mayapples were just nubs about an inch tall. Trilliums were about 3 to 4 inches tall with their leaves about an inch across. All signs pointed to the season being about a week away for greys. We didn't find any mushrooms, but anyday you take a walk in the woods with your son is a good day.

First sighting. Date: Thu, 12 Apr 2001 09:01:26 -0500. Found two little whites( I think) last night,4/11. Just barely through the ground, about the size of the tip of my little finger, under a pear tree in my yard in Piatt County, Illinois. Been hunting for about 7yrs. I checked the normal areas and found nothing, and had given up, thinking it was still too early. Came across these almost by accident. It's been really warm here the last few days, and we've gotten a little rain - I think we need more to really get things going. I found your site two years ago and check it religiously to try to gage when to start looking seriously. Thanks for a job well done and please keep up the good work. Mike

Illinois Findings. Date: Wed, 18 Apr 2001 07:38:43 -0500. From: Barry G. I'm near Belleville Illinois and have found mushrooms all 3 times I've gone out. I'm new to this area, so I was wondering, how long the season usually lasted around here. The reason why I'm asking is along with the spikes we're finding, we're also finding a lot of yellows. Back in Ohio, we usually found the yellows near the end of the season. We've only found a few gray's and black's. All together, we've probably found about 300-400 total in the 3 times we've been out. Looking forward to some warmer weather this weekend and some rain! Let me know how long the season lasts.
Greys found. Date: Wed, 18 Apr 2001 08:09:08 -0500. Went out for a check yesterday and found about a dozen little greys 4/17 in the spot where I found a lot of yellows last year. First time I've found this many greys - usually find whites and yellows - guess cause they're easier to see. I really didn't expect to find anything considering the weather conditions lately. The "whites" I found under the pear tree really never developed more than the cap out of the ground. Now that I can see more of them, looks like they might be half-frees instead. It's been very cold here (below freezing at night) the last few days without any significant precip. - hoping for warmer weather and rain. A very generous friend at work went to the Lawrenceville area last weekend and was kind enough to bring some back to share with me. There must have been a bunch considering the bag full she gave me. Can't wait to get them home and fix'em. Mike T.
Wed, 18 Apr 2001 13:12:47 -0500. 4-12-01 Hunted in Southern Illinois in Hamilton County. Honey suckle fully leafed, forsythia in bloom as well as red bud trees. May apples fully up & leafed out. Temp in 70's with plenty of moisture. But little luck. Found 3 small grays & about 30 of those with white stem. Figure it must be just a tad early. Last year a week earlier than this found them with no problem. Anxious to hear from others in the area to see if they had any luck. Made trip that same day to Shawnee National Forest south of Harrisburg. They are finding plenty of them there according to the local natives. Jack H.

more shrooms. Date: Thu, 26 Apr 2001 06:38:04 -0500. Hi Tom, Had a ton of fun yesterday. I found 190 small to medium size yellows in Peoria County, IL. Other people in the woods were scoring too. I found mine on a west bank that was so steep you had to be a billy goat to get them. There were 119 in one small area that was about the size of a living room. Hey, about 40 percent of those were really small, about the size of my little finger. Do morels grow if you let them ? I always thought that whatever size they are, that's the size they stay. Let me know would ya ? Tom B. Washington, IL.

Date: Thu, 26 Apr 2001 19:32:23 -0500. Greetings fellow mycophiles! Began my northern Illinois morel season with approximately 70 esculentas in DuPage county. All were on southern slopes in partial sun under elms and the occasional ash tree. All were quickly drying out and needed to be harvested! The forecast calls for dry and unseasonably warm weather for the next week. Pray for rain! Jay-bow

Sighting on 04/25/01. Date: Fri, 27 Apr 2001 08:25:27 -0500. From: JOHN L. Sangamon Co. IL. I went out in the afternoon to a private wooded area that a friend of mine owns. I found a couple small half free, not really developed enough so I left them. I continued looking and came across a tree with several clusters of Morchella esculenta, most of which were in prime harvesting condition. As a testament to thourough searching, I found eight initially and thought to myself that perhaps I hadn't looked well enough around that tree. I went back and found another seven! Total time was about an hour, and all were found by the same tree on a southern facing slope. Our soil temp at four inches just reached 50 degrees in the last week, so given a little more rain we should have continued good hunting for a while.

Date: Thu, 3 May 2001 13:21:49 -0500. Shroom report of April 27. Hunted Fulton county. Found approx. 100 yellows. Found 27 at one elm. Suprizingly most were already drying out. Found some 6 inchers. For first time ever found mushrooms under the canopy of young alive elms. Not concentrated just scattered. On the 29th, in Woodford County, found approx. 150. Of these, 40, believe it or not, were grays. All the rest were beautiful big yellows which were already becoming dry. All together in these 2 hunts figured that I had about 8 lbs. Am looking forward to being at the contest in Magnolia on the 5th. Want to talk to others there. Really enjoyed it last year. Jack H.

shrooms. Date: Sun, 6 May 2001 23:08:16 -0500. Hey Tom, Can't thank you guys enough for your info. this year. However, I was a little disappointed with your updates. I don't know what all goes into you're having to set all of this up, I just thought it would have been a little more consistent. At any rate, I just made it back from Quincy, Ill... Things could have been better, but had a good couple of days. Found 7 or 8 lbs. in the time I was able to look. Temps. were good, but moisture was needed, and they got some this weekend as we were leaving. I hope they still come out for those who are still looking up there. Could be good for you guys in Magnolia. Knock'em dead! Let me know how things go, I am not beyond traveling north again this year.. Although, it is doubtful. Thsnks, Dave

none. Date: Thu, 12 Apr 2001 16:12:13 EDT. It was wonderful spring day, went out with my 4 year old daughter today to some of our old faithful locations around the Indianapolis area and found no mushrooms. I thought that we would get lucky as we have had some good soakings of rain this week. Our spring overall in central Indy has been very warm temps but not much rain for the year. We are over 6 inches down for the year. I hope that this drought will not hurt the 2001 season. Central Indy hunters keep me posted on your findings as it tis the season. gonna try again this weekend!!!! good luck to all UKlemm

Indiana report. Date: Fri, 13 Apr 2001 19:05:57 -0600. Went to a woods that last year produced lots of large (the largest nearly 9"!) blacks today, 4-13, and found only four small snakeheads, all at the very southern edge of the woods next to the field. I didn't mind as this is a full week earlier than I personally have found any in previous years. This was also me first hunt to a known black hotspot. This was in west central Indiana. Another location, nearly two hours further north: 'Crazy Dave' has been keeping good records for years, and has a secret spot he counts on for his first small blacks of the season. This year he found his first 31 blacks on 4-8, a full week later than last year. If you know good *early* patches it's time. The rest of us should start finding within the next week. It's celebration time! See you at Mansfield. Mike

Didn't seem like there were enough leaves on trees, or enough brush to fight through. There were some may apples, though. Some just sprouting and others 4-5 inches. Hope this cold spell doesn't ruin our mushroom season. All I think about this time of the year is morel mushrooms. I look at pictures of them on the internet. I just sit here going, "ooooo, oh, wow.. I'm a real mushroom maniac. I dream about them too. Finding morel mushrooms always gives me a big high. We are going out next weekend(27 & 28). Will respond after our search. INDIANA HARVEST. Date: Fri, 20 Apr 2001 01:44:46 EDT. Tippecanoe County, Wednesday April 18th, harvested 80 blacks in early woods mostly 3-4in with several 6-7in as well as a handfull of half-frees, no greys or yellows yet in this particular woods. Cold snap early in the week might have delayed the onset of greys. Warmer weather predicted for Friday and the weekend, should bring on the greys and yellows, a little rain would help. A friend has been finding greys and yellows in his woods since Tuesday, over one hundred so far, but mostly small (2-4 inches.) Expecting bigger and better things this weekend. 'Shroom on, Queti.

Found several pounds worth of half-frees over the weekend, and 11 blacks. Only three or four tiny greys. It got hot on Sunday and half-frees were getting crusty. Ran into a "poacher" in my folks' woods and let him know that I come all the way down from Chicago just for the pleasure of hunting mushrooms this time of year. I don't appreciate the place being picked over. He beat a hasty retreat, but not without taking along his sack full of loot! He was bigger than me, so I didn't press the point. "Doc"

Morel Sighting. Date: Mon, 14 May 2001 08:29:08 -0500. Sat, 12 May 2001 From Alan W in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Found several nice yellow morels in Chain O' Lakes State Park in Northeast Indiana. (Mushroom hunting IS legal in Indiana State Parks, unlike or neighbors in Illinois!) I saw literally dozens of other mushroom hunters, there was practically a line to get into the woods in my favorite spot! It appears that the mushrooms came up in Chain O' Lakes about one to two weeks ago.
Second Season? Date: Tue, 15 May 2001 20:09:21 -0400. From: Jimmie A. Indiana, Kosciuslo County: Was just wondering if there is such a thing as "Second Season" for mushroom hunting. I noticed while reading reports that someone said we could have a second season if we got some rain and moisture. We began finding mushrooms on April 22 and the last day we found any was on May 9. We found over 600 this year, but most were greys. Not many yellows at all....so is it possible that the nice yellows may still come up? Would appreciate any input. Thanks to all who respond.
Morel question. Date: Sat, 2 Jun 2001 20:57:25 -0500. Tom & Vicky - Hi! I love your website. We live in northwest Indiana and I have become absolutely addicted to hunting mushrooms in the spring. Finding them is almost as fun as eating them! I only started looking for mushrooms when I married my husband 5 years ago- his family has a large apple orchard and they've always found a few here and there in the orchard & pumice piles. I've really only been a "avid" hunter the past 2 springs when I've stopped just glancing in the orchard and going out to wooded areas. Last year I found about 300 on a outing with a friend whose family has a 40 acre woods that should be called the morel heaven. This year we only found 13 out there (very dry) but all in all I found 220 this year. 78 under one tree. I found my last one this year on about May 14. Although I admit that was the last time I really looked. Ok now to the point! When is usually "the end of the season" in NW Indiana? How about Northern Michigan? I've never gone up there, but may next year. Thank you in advance for your response! Again, GREAT website! Sincerely, Carey G. Read the info at http://www.ocslink.com/~morel/400301.html
Iowa:
Expect late but good season. Date: Tue, 27 Mar 2001 14:48:19 -0800. From: jeff & teri c. Not yet, JC in Pella, Ia. We are in the same boat as David in Mn. the snow is gone but can't break the 50 degree mark and the lows are well below freezing, way to cold yet. History has me expecting a late, good, and long picking season here with all the snow and winter still hanging on. Anyone agree, snow makes for a good morel season?? Need a warm rain to take the frost out of the ground for starters. Last year was the opposite with us, dining on morels the earliest ever, April 9. As with Joe M. from IL. the date varys year to year but the first morels of the year comes from the same spot year in and year out. I will end with a story from last year you might enjoy. My wife, son and myself left for a day of mushrooming with a cooler of pop for the boy and six pack for the folks. After a long thirsty walk in the woods we approach the truck talking of how good a cold one will taste. Upon opening the cooler the pop was still there but no cold ones for mom and dad. I have waited a year now for (someone I know) to come clean and ask me if we were thirsty that day but no one has. Sound like anything you would do to your mushrooming buddys??? Being the competitive sport it is I guess all is fair in mushrooming. I will be checking in with any sightings but I am not holding my breath yet. Best of luck to all !!!!
Sat, 14 Apr 2001 15:57:32 -0500. I am in the Red Rock, IA area and
my husband says I am too early to think about going out. He wants to wait
until it's Tulip Time. I say we should be out now so we know exactly when
they start.(even though I think small blacks probably already are) Can anyone
advise us as to when to start around RedRock? With all the rain and sun
I think it will be a wonderful year. Thanks Susan
not yet Pella, Ia. Date: Fri, 20 Apr 2001 10:11:05 -0700 From: jeff & teri c. Short update from Pella Ia. MOREL SIGHTINGS UPDATE FROM IOWA. Sun, 22 Apr 2001 10:46:34 EDT. Hi! Well...no sign of the ellusive 'shroom this weekend in Iowa. My dad and husband even drove south almost to the Missouri border and hunted all day. Not even a single gray yet. This is the second weekend in a row with no reward! Ah well, there is always NEXT weekend. :-)
Iowa Sighting. Date: Mon, 23 Apr 2001 14:25:51 -0500. From: Karen C. My father and I found about 50 very small greys in Stephens State Forest in southern Iowa on Sunday, April 21. They should really be out in full force next weekend. Happy hunting to all!
Iowa on the board!! Date: Tue, 24 Apr 2001 14:34:16 -0500. Tuesday April 24th. Found about 80, picked about 60 near Iowa City. Tried all our early grey areas and found none. On a whim tried a brush pile that usually only blooms mid to late season and whala! Yellows ranging from smaller than your "pinky" fingernail to as big as film canisters. Be careful the ticks are out in force. Brad and Shawn in IC...
Mushrooms are here!!! Date: Tue, 24 Apr 2001 21:42:44 -0500. From: Cheryl O. Mushrooms are in Iowa,We found 24 small greys in central Iowa, Can't wait to go back out tommorrow. I think it is going to be a great year for mushrooms.Beau and Cheryl and family, hope you all have a great season.
Date: Wed, 25 Apr 2001 06:56:35 -0700 From: jeff & teri c. Morels at Lake Red Rock Pella, Ia. A short one hour walk produced 50 plus small greys Tuesday afternoon. I am more sure now it will be a bumper crop this year. We only hunted a fraction of my best early spot and we got a shower last night, can't wait to get back at em. Its the year walk slow and when you find one don't leave the area till your sure you have them all. A patch 1/2 the size of football field produced all of these. Shrooms in Iowa. Date: Thu, 26 Apr 2001 09:59:45 -0500. From: Tchinup. This is Susans husband (Red Rock, IA area). We haven't been able to get back out yet, but are planning on going today. There have been sightings and hence, we make the time to go! Just for the record guys, I'm not the shroom stick in the mud that Susie made it sound like, but with the weather patterns this spring I had told her it would be closer to tulip time due to the radical temperature drops at night earlier on and not enough real warm days yet. The time is here, and were heading out. wish us luck!

Mostly large greys that appeared to have been up for a few days. I also found newly emerged yellows. Iowa. Date: Tue, 01 May 2001 08:58:18 -0500. From: Frank G. A friend and I found over 6 pounds of grays and small yellows April 27th around the Ottumwa, Ia area. All within a easy walk of the road and on public land. They were hiding under large leaf foliage, the sneaks. This alone was worth the 9 hour trip from Dallas where I live now. Next year I plan another trip. Unfortunately I totally missed the shrooms that grew here in Texas this very wet Spring season.

Sighting in Iowa. Date: Thu, 3 May 2001 16:13:21 -0700. Sighting date: May 01, 2001 - Muscatine area. I went for the first time this season in my favorite spot. I was alittle apprehensive, as it has been dry and windy. The Mississippi River has more than enough water for five states, but it hasn't rained for awhile. Anyway, I found 145 grey's. Some were good size (4") under the old dead oak and pine trees. Yes, I said pine trees. Every year I find grey mushrooms all around different pine trees. I only spotted two yellow (small) and that was it. I will keep you posted on my progress. Faith from Davenport

The haul weighed in at 22 pounds. Most of the shrooms were in the 4 to 6 inch height range and very fresh. We found one that weighed in at 14 ounces! It looks like one more weekend for Iowa hunters. Sales for you. Date: Sun, 15 Apr 2001 16:18:17 -0500. While making a bbq delivery and planning on hunting Morels yesterday. We got pulled over by a Sheriffs Deputy. Didn't really do anything wrong he just wanted to tell us to be a little safer. Then we asked if he had eatin any Morels lately. He grinned and said yes this morning. We show him the ShroomStick and ShroomSack. He said, you guys must be professional Morel hunters. We all laughed! He wrote down the 800 number off the ShroomStick so you might get an order out of Thayer, Kansas. I believe that is the town where he lived. I gave away three of the four Shroom Sack's I bought. Will probably order a few more soon. The last bag left has been filled a few times, it has a great Morel scent. We took today off. However we had 1 inch of rain last night which should make the next few days great. Happy Hunting... kent
Sun, 15 Apr 2001 21:11:38 -0500. From: Keith. April 15,2001. South Central Kansas. Went out to a new spot that looked good last year with no results, this year we got 75 yellows in an hour. Accidental Find. Date: Mon, 16 Apr 2001 10:03:14 -0500. From: JFund. While raking leaves around an elm tree, I found my first morel of the year in Northeast Kansas in Wabaunsee County. It was about 2 inches tall and a nice firm gray morel. My family and friends contend that it is still a little early to find many in this area of Kansas. Have there been any other finds in NE Kansas?
Southcentral KS Report. Date: Mon, 16 Apr 2001 17:37:26 -0500. April 14,16 On the fourteenth, four of us went out and found a good bed! yeilded about 15 lbs of grays, and yellows. We left some for future generations. Took the day off for Easter. Went out today just for a quick hunt, was short on time. Still found about 3 lbs. in 10 mins. and had to go. I'm sure there were more. The weather is supposed to turn back cold for a few days. Lows in the thirties. Brrrrr! I do have questions about freezing and drying. What is the best way to do these? How much does this effect the flavor? Only my second year hunting. If you have any suggestions I would sure appreciate it! Thanks! Doug

sightings. Date: Fri, 20 Apr 2001 11:57:55 -0500. From: vonda. I live in SE Kansas and found my first morel patch April 4, another patch on April 12. Thought it would be about over then, last Tuesday the 17 I found about thirty more. How lucky is that. They all grow within walking distance from my house. Does anyone know how long the season is or does it just depend on the weather? I would like to share the mushrooms I have found with some older friends of mine that can no longer go out after their own. Any ideas on a way of doing this? I've heard of a morel butter, but don't know how to make it. That way I could give a little bit to all of them. Any ideas? All are welcome. Peace.

morel report! Date: Mon, 9 Apr 2001 13:06:35 -0400. From: James H. We have finally started finding blacks. They are one week later this year than last. 1st find of the season. Date: Sat, 14 Apr 2001 20:24:03 EDT. From: Newton. I found a dozen in the Mammoth Cave area of Kentucky on 4/13 following rain on 4/12. 1 white, 1 grey, 1 half free and 9 yellows. I found these in 2 very different locations. 7 yellows were found next to a road no more than 15 ft from where I parked my car. They were on a southwest facing hillside in poplar woods. The rest were found about 20 ft from the bank of a creek. When I walked into this area, another person was already picking. She had picked @ 20 to 30 yellows. The sad side of this story is that I had walked through this area 6 hrs earlier that day while fishing and did not see any of these. Largest of the yellows was about 4-5 inches. I also checked 2 of my favorite areas on 4/14 and found none. These areas are on northeast facing slopes. Probably still to early.
Kentucky, Northern. Date: Tue, 17 Apr 2001 11:14:49 -0400. From: Judy M. I have been out looking approx. 5 times in Northern Ky, and have found nothing. I knew it was early but the weather seemed right. The lilacs are now in full bloom and that has always been a signal for us to go hunting. But our favorite hunting ground has turned up nothing. Today, it snowed and the temps have dropped into the 20's at night. Rain has been scarce. I am not quitting yet and plan to head out again Friday. Has anyone had any luck in Northern Kentucky yet. I heard they found some whites, in the Corbin area this past week end? Good luck and Happy hunting.
Northern Kentucy sighting. Date: Fri, 20 Apr 2001 09:24:42 -0400. Shrooms are up in Northern Kentucky finally. I have been checking things out for about three weeks now and nothing. But yesterday 4-19-01 I found about 25 grays. Some had been up a day or two but most were fresh. We are finally getting rain today and temps in the high 70's through the week end. So I'm excited and ready to hunt. Going to eat my find yesterday for dinner tonight. Happy Hunting.....Judy in Kentucky.

Morels in Massachusetts! Date: Mon, 9 Apr 2001 18:03:54 -0400. From: Jonathan L. I found hundreds of morels on Saturday afternoon, April 7th! OK...they were at the grocery store...but STILL, I have NEVER seen them in the grocery store! Go to Bread and Circus' "Fresh Pond" store if you just can't wait to find your own! They're going for $40 a pound! Yikes...but you know I HAD to have some! Apparently, they were cultivated in Pennsylvania, so I expect Penn. must be rolling in them now! Last year I found ONE lonely morel onjly after about 10 days out...they say we don't get them here much, but it was still fun to look...I found mine in the city, actually, under crab apple trees. Anyone else had luck in Mass. or New England in general? Jonathan, The only cultivation I'm aware of is by Terry Farms in Auburn AL. You didn't say wether the morels were fresh or dehydrated. If they are fresh they are probably being purchased from independent pickers or from Terry Farms. If they were dehydrated, they could have come from anywhere in the worked. Check the label, we've seen the most from Turkey and Pakistan. If the label truly said Pennsylvania then they are probably being purchased in bulk by one of the commercial farms and then repackaged. Great story!
Comment on morels in Massachusetts. Date: Fri, 20 Apr 2001 23:15:54 -0500 (CDT) From: Jimmy P. B. This for Jonathan L. in Massachusetts: I used to live on Cape Cod, which does not seem to have morels. But one day in mid-May in a residential area in Woods Hole I found 30-40black morels growing out of mulch under the bushes in someone's yard. Some were growing in the adjacent lawn as well, and in fact, several morels were sprouting from the cracks in the patio near the mulch! Thankfully it was a summer home and no one was there, so I helped myself. I think the mulch was carrying the spores, and must have come from a more favorable locale for morels. So you never know where you'll find them!
Massachusetts morels. Date: Fri, 27 Apr 2001 12:40:30 EDT. Hi, I am responding to Johnathan L.'s comments/questions re morels in MA and also have a general question for anyone. I found my first ones ( 6 black morels) last year in the Amherst area in an old apple orchard. I haven't done much serious looking yet this year, due to the lack of rainfall, but expect to check out a few areas I've identified as likely in the next couple of weeks. My general question is- Morels are fond of growing in old orchards. Historically, these areas were treated with lead arsenate when the orchards were in production. Lead and arsenic are persistent metals that don't bio-decay over time. Is anyone aware of studies that have been done on morels found in such environments? What is the level of uptake for those hazardous substances? Is it such that one should avoid consuming morels found there? Thanks. Marty K.

shrooms in michigan! Date: Fri, 06 Apr 2001 16:54:47 -0400. April 4,2001 my wife and I were lucky enough to find "1" lone, small, very tiny morel. The top looked like it had been caught in the frost. All the signs are here and with the rain coming this weekend it will be a race for many to get out and find some. By the way we live in Mid-Michigan. That is close enough for me. We are just waiting for the "forsythia" to start to bloom... that is OUR sign that it is prime time. Hope this is helpful. SCOTTFREE

2000 season. Sun, 22 Apr 2001 07:57:11 EDT. I am anxiously awaiting the 2001 season. Last year I discovered an island in s.e. Michigan(that is as specific as I can get with location) that we call Morel Island. The island actually does have a name which I cannot reveal, but the name we gave it is perfect. The island is very sandy but has an abundance of rich soil, there are no "woods" on the island, just scattered trees and saplings but mostly open grassy fields. Thats right I said no "woods", so where do we find them? They are found in the grassy fields among dandelions, grasses, and tall marsh grasses. Since there are very few trees, there is full sun on the fields which are teaming with white morels. Thousands of them everywhere, we cannot help stepping on some as you walk towards a cluster of 20 or so. They are litterly everywhere! On april 24th I went there with a buddy and we collected nearly 20 pounds of white morels in just over 3 hours. We had 10 plastic grocery sacks filled to the point where you could not even tie them! Some of them were as big as light bulbs but most a little smaller. We found no blacks, no false, and no other types of fungus at all. My friend went back three weekends in a row and said there was just as many as when we went. By the way, we stopped because we had enough and our backs were killing us not because we couldn't find anymore, again they were everywhere. I bought a food dehydrator and started to get busy. Today is april 21st and i still have some left. I wish everyone could have a spot like this and I would love to take people on guided shroom hunts, but I don't think too many people would want to get there completely blind folded the whole time without even knowing what lake you are in. Good luck and I'll post a report very soon on Morel Island. Joe C. Joe, if you switch to a mesh bag, the morels shoud be there for years to come. By using plastic, you are removing the spores from the area. The mushrooms will keep longer in a mesh bag also. Article

Michigan. Date: Wed, 25 Apr 2001 16:15:30 -0400. Ottawa County, MI on the banks of the Grand River. Acutally my front yard, and a MUCH bigger flush than last year, completely saturating an area of about 1,000 square feet underneath an ancient white pine. The soil is relatively sandy, and the mushrooms don't grow all that large (most about 1.5"). I'm going to pick all but a few, and hope that the remaining ones' spores will generate a second flush this year. I can't put off mowing for too long though!! It's a shame, but my front yard is the only place I've been able to find them in the general area thus far for the past 2 years. Believe me, with as many as there, there MUST be more somewhere around here. Wish me luck! Mikael N. Spring Lake, MI
Morel count. Date: Fri, 27 Apr 2001 06:52:31 EDT. Jackson County, Michigan. April 22nd, have hunted for 2 weeks now and finally it pay dirt on monday. I had been seaching black morels but my first find was 16 little fresh tight greys, this prompted me back to the black woods where I found 40 blacks ranging from a fleshy colored thimble sized shroom to a 6" already pithy, starting to dry, cone shaped, spent black and of coarse many in between. Happy hunting? Bill and Marsi D. michigan morel madness http://members.aol.com:/wolfcreekmoon/index.html

Mother load in Michigan. Date: Sat, 05 May 2001 06:50:02 -0400. Hi avid shroomers..... We have had the best year in a long time in northern Michigan. Monday 5-2-01 and Tuesday 5-3-01 we picked more morels than you could count!!!!!!! Everywhere you looked all you could see were mushrooms! They were even growing in clumps of up to 9 in one clump. We picked over 120 quarts of them!! 70+ pounds. I haven't had this much fun in a long time. I think this was about the end of the blacks as we found a few grays and the whites should be starting real soon. Going back out today to see. Have fun everyone.. Patti in Michigan
Date: Tue, 8 May 2001 13:26:16 -0400. The Morels are up in Calhoun County. We bagged 229 whites on Sunday (about 15 lbs.). Over the weekend we went up north to the Cadillac area and bagged 10lbs. of mostly blacks and a few greys. We just had a big rain last night and the search is on again tonight. I look forward to getting your catalog. Thanks and happy hunting, Andy
Marty in MI. Date: Wed, 9 May 2001 23:53:21 -0700. From: Jim B. Disappointing here in lower SE MI. The weather just hasn't cooperated this year. We had 70 -80 deg. weather for several weeks without any rain. Just not the right kind of thing for something that is 88-90 percent water by weight. I saw a few greys that were dried up. Finally today I found a few yellows, almost all under one tree. They had a texture something similar to cardboard. Hey Patti in Northern MI., could you tell us your spot?

Think Mich. had a second season. Date: Sun, 3 Jun 2001 06:44:20 -0400 From: Jimmie A. Indiana thoughts: Michigan, Boyne City, thought the season was over, then around Memorial Weekend, sightings started again. Some reported fresh mushrooms! Big ones. They had slowed way down and thought it was over, then came rain and some sun, then some more mushrooms. Wish Indiana could have had that happen. That would be really awesome......(Read this on Rocky & Franks message boards) REALLY HAVE ENJOYED ALL THESE MESSAGE BOARDS.! Will be going through all of them next year. See you then. 06/03/01
Minnesota:
Sightings! Date: Sun, 25 Mar 2001 14:48:35 -0600.From: David V. Here in Southern MN. Mankato. The shrooms are having a bit of a hard time sprouting through all the snow. But the positive is that we might have enough moister due to the snow to have a pretty good year. I will also be visiting Fulton Cty IL. were I own some land to chase mushrooms and turkeys in late April. PS The ice fishing is still going strong in these parts.

Minnesota Report. Date: Tue, 15 May 2001 08:41:44 -0500. From: Dan F. Found a handful of small grays near Mendota Heights (near St Paul) yesterday (May 14). Cooked them up, breaded and sauteed, last night... yum! This was only my 2nd time finding morels... the first time I was fishing in Wisconsin and stumbled onto a few quite by accident. I've been actively looking now for three springs, so finding even this handful was quite rewarding. Plenty of woodticks out there this year, by the way.

Morels found in River Bottom / St.Charles Co. Missouri. Date: Thu, 12 Apr 2001 12:20:37 -0700. Weehooo, found some in st.charles county. 29 of em. Mostly whites, a few greys. Three Reds that I'm scared to eat though. Been hitting it pretty hard this week. Finally paid off. Some were a few days old that I must have missed. The rest not more than a day old. Now what about these Reds ? I have never eaten them before and according to MDC they are poisonous with a substance called MMH or MMC 's can't remember. Anyway if cooked thoroughly it removes the toxicity of this chemical or substance. So if I try these does anyone have any suggestions as far as cooking ? Obviously I will try them myself only in a small amount. Unless one of you guys want to come and pick them up ? Heh Heh. 2BHNTN. You just might want to check out Michael Kuo's page at http://www.ux1.eiu.edu/%7Ecfmfk1/mycology/morels.htm

April 12th around 5:30 p.m. With the unseasonably warm weather we were having I have been looking diligently for about a week and one half to no avail. Tonight 5 shrooms. (What I call common or yellow morels). Four in a cluster and one about a foot from them. One inch to 1 1/2" tall. I should not have harvested them, but I did just to show my wife to get her fired up. We have both our daughters out of the house now and just recently were blessed with out first grandchild. A girl, her name is Belle. She will be introduced to this wonderful bounty as well in time. I like the walking stick my wife and daughters bought from you for my 43th birthday several years ago. Compass is a plus. Timber Troll

morels in missouri!!!! Date: Sun, 15 Apr 2001 22:32:35 EDT. From: Cabow. date: april 15th kansas city missouri. well i've been anticipating this for 10 months. i am in my 8th year of morel hunting and each year brings more excitment and disappointment. some places that produced one year came up dry other years. anyway after the illinois hunt in 1999 we returned to grandmas farm in northern missouri and found the largest morels i've ever seen.some large enough to cut in half and stuff with cheese and sausage..(large as a 16 oz can)..ok about this year. i've been hunting for the last two weeks comming up empty at all my usual productive sites. the weather has been cooperative..so i can only guess that its a matter of time. we are expecting two evenings of below freezing temps..can this ruin a season??..all i have found as of april 14th are a few small greys that went real well with breakfast..anticipating a great season..dont let me down mother nature
St.Louis 04/14/01. Date: Mon, 16 Apr 2001 11:08:24 -0400. From: Jennifer P. St. Louis MO. Found 15 or so spikes left probably the same amount behind they were dried or drying up. Morel sighting in Missouri. Date: Mon, 16 Apr 2001 11:25:29 -0400. From Missouri Mike, I have a morel sighting to report. I found 5 Morchella esculenta (yellows) and 21 Morchella Semilibera (half-free) in about 4 hours of hunting on 4/13 and 4/14. I was hunting about 50 miles S.E. of Kansas City, Missouri (Johnson county) on a south facing hillside. I also hunted a short while on level ground without any luck. Hopefully the freezing temps the next couple nights won't slow them down much. The yellows should be popping up like crazy in the next couple of weeks! I hope! Mike
More Morels found in St.Charles county. Date: Mon, 16 Apr 2001 13:16:57 -0700. Went out Sunday after my son Robbie 11, bagged his first turkey during the youth hunt here in Missouri Saturday. First Morels of the year!(Missouri). Date: Mon, 16 Apr 2001 16:59:36 -0500. Though I've looked long and hard for hours every weekend, it wasn't until this morning when I wasn't actually looking that I stumbled upon some. I found 1 gray 2" tall and one yellow about 3" tall. The first one located in wet leaves 10 feet from the nearest tree and the second one was touching the base of a Black Walnut tree. I found these 30 minutes north of Kansas City Missouri on a private farm. A friend of mine also found 2 grays about 2" tall each. Should be more soon. Good luck! Jack W. M.
'shrooms. Date: Mon, 16 Apr 2001 18:35:17 EDT. Found about 100 blacks on 4/7 and 130 blacks with a few whites and half frees on 4/14 in East Central Missouri --- Max.
first official find....go figure. Date: Tue, 17 Apr 2001 23:24:51 EDT. From: Cabow. kansas city area. april 17th..well since we last spoke i tried some different woods on those slopes i keep hearing about..i guess the ones that get sun all day..well i was surprised to find all the stages of morel that i have ever heard of in the same stretch of woods..i found two false morels about the size of a large fist..wow wish i could eat those..anyway i also found the half-free kind..ha ha all stalk and no meat..is it unusual for the caps to be smooth instead of pitted...i found both kinds..oh and i collected about 30-40 true morels..mostly greys but also a few whites or yellows that looked like they had been up for a few days but avoided the sun.still good enough to keep... the temps had been freezing last night and tomorrow night but the shrooms still had the texture of fresh morels...just lucky i guess..will these areas produce more or should i move on...i still worry about the freezing temps...but i have a newfound hope after today..the weather is suppose to be rainy and warm back up..i'll hope for the best and continue expanding my searches to places i havent looked before..it sure is paying off..most of the true morels were almost 2 inches tall..i was astounded..thought i was just getting exercise.......how exciting..thanx mother earth

On the watch in Omaha, NE. Date: Thu, 5 Apr 2001 20:11:47 -0500. From: j. t. I've been out scouting the ground, and haven't had any luck, but the fever is upon me! We are expecting some more rain on friday with steady temps between 60-70 degrees. I would imagine by this weekend I should be able to find the much anticipated 1st one of the year. I will keep you guys updated! It's great to know there are other "crazy people" out there. My wife thinks I lose my mind every year at this time, but if she could only understand the feeling that comes over a guy that loves to hunt the elusive morel. Your catalog looks great and I can't wait to see it!

Morels in SW Nebraska. Date: Wed, 11 Apr 2001 02:59:11 -0500. I found my first morels of the season today (April 10th) near the Republican River here in Southwest Nebraska. Picked 20 small greys with the biggest ones being only about 1.5" tall. They were small but the deer had been through the area and I wasn't going to let them have these. =) On the other side of the tree I found several bunches of really small yellows which I didn't pick. (There must be about 100 of them). I will take my camera back tomorrow and get some pics to send along. I had never seen this many like this - they were all really tiny in mounds. It rained late this evening with the high today only about 50 degrees. Tomorrow's forecast looks about the same. I believe we are going to have a good season as we have had a lot more moisture this winter - last year wasn't all that great. Thankyou for your page and all of the interesting info. Regards, Nathan
Morels in SW Nebraska. Date: Thu, 12 Apr 2001 02:34:58 -0500. I am hoping I can pick some tomorrow morning. I am headed to Chicago tomorrow and wont return until Easter so all I can do is keep my fingers crossed that whatever I leave doesn't get eaten by deer or picked by someone else. =) Happy hunting! morel sightings for Nebraska. Date: Sat, 14 Apr 2001 19:00:40 -0500. Hi I'm a bit of a newbie, but I've been hunting morels for a few years now. I'm in southeastern Nebraska, just north and west of Lincoln. I went out looking on thursday, the 12th of April, and did not see any yet. The spot I checked is very dependable, so If there had been any up, they would have been there. I think the ground is not warm enough yet. It's a late spring this year. There are also not lilacs blooming yet, so that also tells me it is not warm enough. I will report as soon as I find some. Rxwoman.
sightings report. Date: Tue, 24 Apr 2001 15:02:38 -0500. Stunned in south eastern Nebraska ( just north of Lincoln). On sunday april 22, I checked the dependable spot after a good half inch rain, and still no mushrooms! The ground must really be cold. The lilac bushes are leafing out, but the blooms are still in tight bud form. I guess what they say about the lilacs blooming at the right time is true. You never know what to beleive, and what is just 'old wive's tales". Supposed to get highs in the 80's from wednesday to sunday. surely that will warm the ground sufficiently to make them appear. I wll most definately post when I finally find some. I'd love to hear from anyone else near by, Lincoln, Ne, extreme north eastern Kansas, or western Iowa along the Missouri. Post a response here. Rxwoman.
Morels in SW Nebraska. Date: Tue, 24 Apr 2001 17:47:03 -0500. They are out in full-force! Picked two large bags full in about an hour and a half. Quite a few that were 3-4 inches tall. We had an inch of rain over the weekend (along with some nasty winds) and today's temp got up to about 75 degrees. Nathan in SW Nebraska - Republican River Valley
Date: Thu, 26 Apr 2001 17:47:27 -0500. Apr 26 Sightings First year on your sight and really enjoy following the harvest. We use it to find out how far to drive south before we can start looking here in northeast Nebraska. Found first mess around Rockport,Mo April 24. Yesterday found a nice mess here, about 30 miles north of Omaha. All were along the Missouri River, alot of yellows and few greys. Need some rain before it gets too hot. Will be watching to maybe travel north to continue the fun of the hunt. Thanks, Buster.
MORELS. Date: Wed, 2 May 2001 20:41:15 -0500 (CDT) please send me a catalog i have had good luck this year , so far ive found 50 morels in nebraska along the platte river. DON
Date: Thu, 3 May 2001 17:50:08 -0500. south eastern Nebraska, just north of Lincoln. Waited, and waited for the ground to warm enough, and then it became too warm. found one little patch near my hot spot where a couple were trying to come up, but they hit the hot, dry wind we were getting, and became 'petrified'. I've been picking 2, or 3, tiny ones from that same little patch for the last couple of days. Other than that I've been very disapointed. Even after the inches, and inches of rain we've recieved. I don't know what the problem is. They should be coming up like mad all over. I'll keep looking. Rxwoman. Those "petrified" are really just dehydrated "on the stem". They'll taste just fine if you let them soak in water for an hour or so and then let them drain on a paper towel.
Nebraska. Date: Sat, 5 May 2001 23:28:00 -0500. From: drgm. Response to Rxwoman in Nebraska, 5-5-2001 heavy rain these past couple of days and the lilacs are still trying to bloom out, hey did you find any yet north of Lincoln? I am going out tommorrow down by the Missouri river should be a great day! I have been out twice and no luck yet but I will always remember the days of picking a couple of hundred while floating down the river banks in a buddy's boat.

New Jersey:
more morels in PA. Date: Tue, 24 Apr 2001 10:31:23 -0400. I checked my local early spot again last Sunday, 4/22. We found 14 black morels. There was rain on each of Friday and Saturday nights. But, the early crop was small, probably due to the hard freezes that occurred last Wednesday and Thursday mornings. All 14 of these morels were found at the bottom of a south facing slope nearby tulip trees. Yesterday, 4/23, I ventured east of here into New Jersey to my favorite spot for blacks. But, I found more ticks than morels. I picked 21 small ones -black morels, that is- in a spot that typically gives up 50-60. The combination of a hard freeze last week and dry weather to follow -conditions that occurred in New Jersey- are probably to blame for the small harvest. Now the weather has turned hot and dry, not a good combination for us morel hunters. So I don't think that this will be a very good year for the black morels. There's still time for the weather to turn more favorable for the yellows. I'll check my local spot again on Thursday. Dave in PA
found in NJ. Date: Mon, 30 Apr 2001 23:08:09. 4/19, found 75 Morchella angusticeps under Prunus serotina in Cape May County in mixed woods. Area appears to have been burned over, several years ago. This date is later than I've found them in past years. CaperAl.
morels in PA. Date: Tue, 08 May 2001 12:15:27 -0400. Checked one of my favorite old apple orchards on Sunday. There were zero yellows. I wasn't surprised since there had not been rain for 15 consecutive days and temperatures have soared into the 90s during several of those days. Yesterday, Monday 5/7, I checked another favorite orchard. I found 23 yellows, mostly pretty fresh, but small. So there is still some hope for the morel season here in Eastern PA. We need rain. I'll check another spot today. Ended up with a total of 110 blacks between my spot here and my other spot in New Jersey. That's below normal. I'm assuming that the blacks are over & done with. However, there is a Northeastern facing slope that gets a nice late fruiting of blacks late in the season. If we get rain soon -looks doubtful- they may come out. Dave In PA
New York:
NY State! Date: Mon, 9 Apr 2001 11:10:14 EDT. Hello to all New England (and all others for that matter) morel pickers. I went out to check some of my sites, sadly discovered my all time best producing, easy to get to, site has been razed, all 200 acres of it, for development. On a brighter note, now that the snowpack has gone way down, some ground showing here and there, and the copious rains have followed, and lots of cloudy days, my instinct tells me this could be one of the best, if maybe a bit late, springs for those of us in the lower New England area (you know, kind of like a slightly below average season for you midwesterners). Quite jealous reading the reports of people already finding. Luckily still have a few ounces of dried left from last year, but can't wait for the first taste of fresh morels again. Dave

Ohio morels. Date: Fri, 18 May 2001 16:36:47 -0400. Tom, I believe it's over here in Ohio. We didn't get the rain on time here in Southeastern or Central Ohio in time. The season for Me was about the same as the last 2 years which I considered poor compared to the mid 90's. Although I managed to can 17 pints and give a few pounds away this pales compared to the years of canning 30 pints and just as many 1/2 pints. I would rate the season a 5 although I'm sure some would disagree. Morels can be found in abundance in areas where rainfall is abundant but unfortunately My areas didn't get the rain on time, so I base My score on My own finds. Thanks and good luck to those who are still picking. Jeff in Pataskala

I don't mean what county section or anything that would give away your site; just the general area e.g.., south central, or near Talequah etc. I've been looking in tulsa county (NW Tulsa County!) but haven't seen any yet--just mica caps. Its been a bit dry around here past 3 weeks. Hoping for rain and a bit warmer temps. Dean M. Tulsa

morels in Oklahoma. Date: Sat, 07 Apr 2001 14:05:04 -0500. Being from Illinois originally I would have never thought that there were any morels in this state but I was wrong, last Sunday I found about a pound and a half. Then yesterday while turkey hunting I found about 4 pounds. Then this morning again while turkey hunting I found almost ten pounds. Yes you may think that I am full of it but it is true. I am just as surprised as you are. I found them in the Wildlife Management Area just north of Altus-Luggert Lake in southwest Oklahoma. Happy hunting. Layne C.

Mushrooms in Oklahoma! Date: Mon, 9 Apr 2001 17:15:05 EDT. From: BUCKEYE. Growing up in Ohio I am used to finding morels. I moved to Oklahoma in 1979 and never gave mushroom hunting another thought. Several years ago I started to hunt in central Oklahoma. The hunting is very good, plenty of yellow sponge mushrooms in the Oklahoma City area. As of April 7, finding some grays and fresh yellows last night, April 9th. Need some rain, but the hunting in central Oklahoma is good!

Oklahoma Morels! Date: Thu, 12 Apr 2001 23:06:14 -0400. Who would of thought - but tonight (4-12-01) I have three types of Morels bagged and in the fridge. The ones that caught my wife's eye from horseback was some beige, 6" type. While hunting the creek bottom, I found 2" greys and some 4" tans. What is maddening is that I also found a couple of spots where there were a dozen or so that were at least a week old and going moldy so I left them. I knew they grew here but this is the firs harvest. Now, must find some recipes. Bill - Oklahoma City
Morels in Tulsa! Date: Fri, 13 Apr 2001 20:22:17 -0500. Finally! Found morels in Tulsa--after several years of searching the area over a 40 mile radius and coming up empty--found 6 tonight, all under one dead elm tree, right in the heart of Tulsa! They had been perfectly dried by severe dry windy conditions the past several days, following a rain shower about four days ago. They're dark brown-grey looking, about 2-3 in. long (dry) with a huge base (still moist). Supposed to rain tonight--I'll be back re-checking! Probably getting late in season for here-- red bud trees starting to fade out, iris blooming. We'll see. Dean M. Tulsa
Hot yellow patch in Norman (oklahoma). Date:Sat, 14 Apr 2001 10:23:50 -0500. Hello shroomers, This is my first season of morel hunting, and I had my first success last weekend. I found a patch of yellow morels 2-4 inches tall around a very large old juniper tree. Whooped for joy, whipped out the knife, and took home a big handful to saute in butter. Location was "At lake Thunderbird State Park"- that's all you get! Have also found and eaten this past year: yellow chanterelles, fairy ring mushrooms, oyster mushrooms, and horse mushrooms. Morels are the tastiest, chanterelles a close second. Good luck! Julian H.
First time out. Date: Sat, 14 Apr 2001 20:27:53 -0500. Found about 7 gallons. NW Oklahoma 1 1/" tall to about 5". Trying to find out how to preserve them...most of the neighbors have left for the weekend, so can't share them enough to do much good. Some kind of problem, what? Fresh, they taste like ink caps, also forund around dead stumps and burned wood. Dick M.
shrooms!!!! Date: Sun, 15 Apr 2001 09:21:59 -0500 (CDT). Northwest Oklahoma. My husband and I are 1st time shroom hunters. Have fell in love with it! more morels. Date: Tue, 17 Apr 2001 19:44:33 -0500. Julian H. here again from Norman, Oklahoma: I was up in Woodward yesterday and found over twenty large yellow morels growing in a mixed juniper/cottonwood/elm lowland. I found all of these in only an hour or so- had I had all day I would have found pounds of them. We really need rain- some of these that I found were dried on the stalk and probably a week or more old. The 'head' of the largest morel in the bunch, though, was almost the diameter of my fist! I had no idea I'd find them growing in such a dry part of the state... Happy hunting.
Frist time hunting. Date: Thu, 3 May 2001 20:02:45 -0700. From: Allen M. I was in OK the weekend of April 19th and ate and hunted them for the first time. It was so great, they say they start coming up the first or second week of April and are gone by the third week and we found the or maybe the last 30 that day. Could you send me a How and when to find them in southern California I live in Mission Viejo in Orange County, thanks again.
Ontario:
the morel situation in Ontario. Date: Tue, 3 Apr 2001 09:30:48 -0400. hello Tom, thanks for the loot-very exciting. just wanted to give you the low-down regarding the picking this year in Ontario- went out for the first time this weekend to a spot where a usually find yellows-no sign as of yet... the weather here still remains a bit too snowy and cold but will keep you posted. take care Tatjana B.
Southern Ontario update! Date: Sun, 22 Apr 2001 10:25:46 -0400. Hi Tom, Read about your recent fame and it is about time. You've been wonderful. As for the the Southern Ontario situation, since I live about 2hrs drive from Detroit I always check how the Michigan scene is doing. Since I seem to be the only Ontarian, wanted you all to know that have been avidly hunting and have yet to spot one...however-the weather here is finally beginning to co-operate and I'm hoping to bring good new soon. I certainly agree that the season this year will be later than last as winter has been putting up a bit of a fight. cheers. Tatjana
morels. Date: Tue, 8 May 2001 17:41:48 -0700. From: Donna G. May, 08/01. Hi, I'm Donna from Ontario, Canada and my husband and I just had our first sighting today. We live about 15miles south of Barrie, Ontario. We picked 4 of them, but left the smaller ones to check on tomorrow. Last year at the same bush, we didn't find any at all, but 2 years ago we found enough to fill 8 freezer bags and we still have one bag left in the freezer. We've also come home from morel hunting and found some on our property. When I soak them, I throw the water on the lawn and the spores will grow in the next couple of years. The morels we find are a beige colour and about 25kms from here they grow to be a reddish colour. So depending on the soil, is the colour of the morel. Since we've moved to the country almost 10 years ago, we've been avid hunters of this very delicious wild mushroom. I was very happy to find your site when I was researching morels.
Morel report. Date: Tue, 15 May 2001 20:39:21 -0400. Hi, I found 9 Morels on May 13th near Bancroft, Ontario, Canada. Found near wild Leeks in rich soil. There are not too many yet. I am hoping a rain will bring out more. Great web page. Thanks. Manfred

Caught the fever!!! Date: Mon, 2 Apr 2001 12:50:21 -0700. As recent transplant to Medford, Oregon by way of 10 years in Arizona, I am delighted to find Morels in this area. As a child in Iowa, many a fine spring day were spent tromping through the woods with the folks & a paper bag. I am in the Rogue valley and from about the middle of March have collected about 3 pounds of morels "right in my back yard" I have been looking in the surrounding hills but, have had no luck there so far. Happy Hunting! Rita

Pennsylvania:
Sighting in PA! Date: Tue, 17 Apr 2001 10:25:04 -0400. My Fellow Morelomaniacs, Last Sunday, the 15th of April, I made my second trip to my local early morel spot. I zig-zagged up and down about 4 miles of the gently sloping sunny ridge of oaks and tulip trees -definitely not "as the crow flies", at least not any sane crow. Unlike my first such journey, this one produced a morel! That's right, a single black morel, standing about 3-3.5 inches in hight. I cut it down and placed it into a bag, hoping to find a few more. But, alas, that was the only one. I guess that things just dried up a bit too quickly. For we had not had rain for 6 days or so, at that time. The weather had been fairly mild, with days in the 60's and nights mostly in the 40's for over a week. There was one frosty morning on or about on the 11th. Now that we have had a fairly good soaker of a rain -last Sunday night- it's supposed to get pretty cold. A hard freeze is predicted for Thursday morning. This seems to be the main problem here in Eastern PA. Either we get the rain, followed by extreme cold, or it warms up and dries out too much. It is still quite early, but a freeeze will likely negate the first good sized flush of blacks in my area. Typically, I can find about 50 blacks, locally. I travel about 100 miles East of here for better harvests of blacks. I'll wait for a week or so before doing that. I do get a few yellows in old apple orchards, around here, mostly during the first two weeks of May. The local woods do not seem to yield many yellows. I think it's because of the rain-followed-by-cold syndrome. I mostly seek out tulip trees, when looking in the woods. Some people find them by sycamore. I suppose that I shall take my lone black morel to the taxidermist for mounting. It is a pretty nice one, by local standards, about 3.5 inches tall. Today, I'll check my spot again. The ground did warm up before the last rainfall came through. Dave In PA
Date: Thu, 19 Apr 2001 20:34:00 -0400. hi, my name is larry. I live in Homer City, Pa. six miles south of Indiana, Pa (Jimmy Stewart's home town). I found my first morel mushroom of the season today. It was located on a side of bank next to a gravel road. I find them there each year. There were 6 of them, only about an inch in size. They were just popping out. I'll keep you posted on anything new i see.
mmmmmmmm. Date: Sun, 22 Apr 2001 23:34:47 -0400. From: The Byers Family. Hi, just a note to say the temps and rains in Pa. are already producing morels here. they are few yet but will not be long till harvest increases good luck to all morel hunters.
Sighting: Chester County Pennsylvania. Date: Mon, 23 Apr 2001 20:51:43 -0400. Hi, I found 6 morchella esculenta's today, 4/26/01. (Chester County, Pa.) They were in a hardwoods area. The weather is finally warm enough for the mushrooms to start growing and I hope to see more as the week goes on. These were excellently camoflaged in amongst dry leaves and new growths of stinging nettle. Actually, I passed this area and came back and looked again and low and behold there were 6 in this area that I did not see 10 minutes earlier. So it pays to look twice! I'll be looking harder next time. Good hunting, Bob W.
more morels in PA. Dave in PA
PA sightings. Date: Thu, 26 Apr 2001 01:18:34 -0400. April 25, central PA. Picked 4 blacks & about 8 half-free this afternoon. First time out this year, I've been judging the timing by the reports at this site. About fifty miles North of Harrisburg, PA, they are just starting to pop up. Largest was about 3 inches, the rest....I took anyway. Ken in PA.
Date: Wed, 25 Apr 2001 21:22:31 -0400. From: mroach. Eastern PA. Went out today - very cold. Only found 3 but believe me they won't go to waste. Yes, women are 'room hunters, too. I love it! Give it a couple warm days and watch out.
Morels in Pennsylvania. Date: Thu, 26 Apr 2001 07:30:03 -0400. From: Bet. Yesterday, April 25, 2001, my daughter, 5 year old granddaughter, and I went hunting. We live in Northeastern PA, about 60 miles north of Pittsburgh. Granddaughter spotted the first morels of the season--4 little blacks. We also found 6 helvella. I expect the esculenta will appear in a week.
morels in PA. Date: Fri, 27 Apr 2001 09:34:03 -0400. From: Went back to my local spot yesterday, 4/26. I didn't expect to do very well, so the 23 black morels and 5 half-free mrels that I picked were more than I had anticipated. The weather has been too dry here in Eastern PA for a really good morel fruiting. Hopefully, there will be a few showers during the upcoming week, so that the yellow morel season gets off to a good start. Typically, our yellows come out right at the beginning of May. Dave In PA
morels in PA. Dave In PA
Saskatchewan, Canada:

MORELS FOUND IN SOUTH CAROLINA! Date: Sat, 31 Mar 2001 22:04:39 EST. MARCH 31, 2001.....Morels found in Sumter National Forest. South Carolina Report. Date: Sat, 07 Apr 2001 09:02:15 -0400. I found 50 small blacks this morning 4/7/01 in a low lying wooded area outside Fort Mill SC. My heart jumped when I found that first one and I gave praise to the great mushroom lord right there on the spot ! No one here hunts and they give you that " Your crazy look " when you inquire about it. I was under the opinion that they do not grow here until last year, I found an old gray under my neighbors air conditioning unit by chance. So this year I was bound and determined to find them. These are the kind that you find in the first of the season.Hopefully the monster yellow and grays are not far behind. I`am going to Roanoke Virginia next weekend and hopefully I`ll have a good report from there too...Craig M.
South Carolina Report. Date: Sat, 14 Apr 2001 11:28:50 -0400.This morning I found 25 yellows in a low lying wooded area and on a wooded hillside in Lancaster County east of Fort Mill. The biggest was around 3 inches tall and about two fingers thick. We need more rain and they should really be up in good numbers and size. I did not make it to Roanoke today and hopefully will get up there before the season is over. But ! I had a wonderful breakfast of mushrooms this morning. Try running a fried mushroom through some sour cream and horseradish, it will not get any better than that and it will set you free !...Happy Hunting Craig

another sighting!!! Date: Mon, 2 Apr 2001 22:06:39 -0500. From: pattyjo c. Hello Fellow shroomers!!!! Hubby left last friday and headed for South-Eastern Ky. and North-Eastern Tenn. and found a few, small seven black mushrooms and ten snake-heads! But this is the beginning of the Big Hunt for us because they aren't up here in Southern Indiana as of yet; or shall I say that we have found. Can't tell you where exactly , I'm sure you can understand why! :) We have reallly enjoyed the pamphlet you sent us and can't wait to join in the fun and adventure in Illinois!!!!!!
more. Date: Tue, 3 Apr 2001 17:11:25 EDT. Found another 27 on short trip to same location between rain spells. About even mix of yellows and grays. Finally after being shot down for 5 years in TN, I'm starting to find some. I think some of my northern friends down here have been misleading me as to were to look (imagine that). This lady is co-worker of Judy's and she's been mowing them off in her orchard for years! Didn't know what they were. Sun is due out rest of week and supposed to get up in the high 70's, so expectations are high. Will keep you updated. Chris and Judy near Atoka
morels found near Johnson City. Date: Wed, 4 Apr 2001 15:07:21 -0400. From: Steven R. from Pennsylvania but every year we travel to Tennessee to mushroom and turkey hunt. Went down 3/30 and 3 of us found about 60 morels ( ranging from black to white 3/4" to 3" tall). We went back out 4/01 and found another 250 (this time the size was much greater - they averaged about 3" with few small ones.) The rain spells and warm afternoons are really starting the bring them out
morel report. Date: Wed, 04 Apr 2001 18:10:28 -0500. Date, April 4, 2001.
Checked a park near Gallatin, Tennessee that had only yielded 4 half-free
morels over the past 8 years, but always felt like a good place. Found approximately
200 today, all within a 100 by 200 foot area. Last Saturday I checked some
old apple trees near Rock Island, Tennessee that always produce big
yellows. Nothing yet. Last year at this time they were at their peak, which
was unusually early. My best areas just northwest of Nashville usually
peak around middle to late April. May be a great year if the rains continue.

April 5, 2001. Date: Thu, 05 Apr 2001 17:26:55 -0500. From: Ross C. April 5, 2001. Found 67 this afternoon , flat top mountain in Middle Tennessee at 1320 ft. elevation. The area was rocky, the majority of black mushrooms were found were near 2 young cherry trees, which I though was unusual. Several of the find were some of the largest half-free I have ever seen. The half-frees seemed not to be around any particular species of tree. I have not hunted this area in several years as the timber was cut and getting to the area was difficult. Several years ago, a friend and I found over 1000 in the same area in just a few hours. I learned one thing from the large find and that was that blacks do not dry well or I was not successful in so doing. I have dried whites with great success, but I must be missing something in trying to dry black morels. Ross
morels again. Date: Mon, 9 Apr 2001 17:53:03 EDT. I went back to my favorite spot Sunday April 8 and found approximately 40 Blacks, most of which were fairly large, about 30 small whites and a few aged half frees. I think next week will be good for whites in the southern part of Middle Tennessee near the Alabama line. Richard from Tennessee

Went again today 9 April and the 30 I found were starting to dry up due to the 80 plus tempatures here again near sycamore trees.
morel foray report. Date: Tue, 10 Apr 2001 12:50:15 EDT. Tom, just wanted to let you know how well we did on the Morel MushroomHunting Club's first annual foray, in Knoxville, Tennessee. With about 25 avid morel hunters eager to hit the woods, we came up with a three day total of 1,797 morels! Mainly black morels, a few grays and half free. We had perfect weather, and all went home with their bags full! I saw many of your products there, mushroom knife, and shroom stick. It was a wonderful experience. Sincerely, Chris M.

TN morels. Date: Tue, 10 Apr 2001 18:01:49 -0400. From: Thomas B. Morels are here in SE Tennessee! Went out Sunday 4/8/01 and found about 35 on one of the mountains Northwest of Chattanooga. (Last year I found them on April 1st) My hunting time was limited otherwise we probably would have found more. Also, the place I usually go was closed for Turkey Season...so the usual spots were unavailable. Anyway, others may want to try "road hunting" in unfamiliar areas. Lots of gravel roads leading through the middle of nowhere also carry you into great mushroom areas. My buddy was driving about 10 mph while I was scanning the woods on the right. Sure enough, I told him to pull over when I saw something that looked promising. And there was our first of many morels. He was amazed, but I have used this technique successfully many times. (It's no substitute for hiking through the woods, but in areas you've never hunted before it can sure get you pointed in the right direction quickly.) Be cautious. It's best to know whose land you're on (I'm not saying you don't). In Illinois it can mean a $250.00 fine for trespassing, If you're caught with morels it can be criminal tresspass (possible felony) because the courts think you are stealing - so does the landowner!
Sighting of Morel Mushroom. Date: Wed, 11 Apr 2001 19:47:34 -0700. I found a Morel Mushroom in my front yard today. It had been there for a while it was about 2 3/4 inch tall and about 1 1/4 thru the base. I live in Hohenwald, Tennessee. We picked Morels in Oregon in 1989 and was very surprised to find one here. Mozell C.
It gets better, but I do not know how. Date: Sat, 14 Apr 2001 20:34:32 EDT. I found 99 today in my favorite spot. Not near my record, but still looking good. I think maybe next weekend may be the end however. Mostly white/yellows from one to four inches in height. This has not been my best year, but close. Southern Middle Tennessee near the Alabama line. Richard in Tennessee
morel report. Date: Tue, 17 Apr 2001 18:14:00 -0500. April 17. Checked out my favorite site northwest of Nashville, TN this morning. Found over 200 (about 10 lbs.!) of nice fresh yellows in less than 2 hours. Also saw many tiny yellows just peeking up through the leaves. While many were found randomly under just about every type of tree, the best patches were all around black cherry. Hal
Texas:
Texas Morels, Date: Thu, 8 Mar 2001 09:46:08 -0600. From: David. After a two-year drought, morels are back in Texas -- we have gathered baskets of them around Lake Whitney. In Texas, they seem to prefer typical Hill Country terrain. Look for areas with cedar trees (really, they are a variety of juniper, but every redneck in central Texas calls them cedars) and spanish oaks, limestone.
Morel sightings, Date: Tue, 13 Mar 2001 21:13:10 -0600. From: Susan M. S. After several years of drought conditions we were blessed with a rainy winter, and now MORELS in the Edwards Plateau of the central Texas. Curious which species we might have (the pale-yellow guys that are about 4 inches tall, found in the leaf litter under Ashe juniper trees on limestone hills. So if you could steer me to a Texan I'd be much obliged. Being a transplant from Wisconsin I had forgotten the elusive mushroom hunters. Thanks, Susan S., Center Point, Texas (NW of San Antonio) Susan, we'll let you know if we get any volunteers. Otherwise, you might ask a guy named Phil at Mycoinfo He's from the Austin area and is a member of of the mycological group for that area - He's even found morels in November in Texas!
Sightings in Texas. Date: Thu, 15 Mar 2001 20:18:25 -0600. To David : Exciting news around Lake Whitney . The reason rednecks call Juniperus virginiana "cedar" is due to its common name , Eastern redcedar. JR
Austin Texas, Date: Fri, 16 Mar 2001 19:03:00 -0600. Hello, I am a student at the University of Texas. This weekend we were walking outside of town and found thousands of morels. I knew what they were, but most people around here don't even know what they are. We got some friends and picked about 50 lbs of them. I have a few questions. My friend has been storing them for three days already in a closed plastic bag in the fridge. I realized this is a mistake, but are we too late? How do we know if they get rotten or start to get moldy? Are they dangerous to eat now? What is the best way to store them, should I put them out in the air to dry, or leave them in the fridge? Should I slice them or leave them whole. I appreciate your advice on my questions, and look forward to hearing from you. If you would like info about our discovery in Texas, I am happy to talk about it more. Thanks, Roger G. Roger, Congrats on the find. Airtight is a problem, but being in the fridge may help. If they haven't been washed or soaked in water, they should probably be ok. If they have been washed, then you'd better through a big party - quick (be sure to invite me!) If they've not been washed, you should still be able to dehydrate them. The following quote is from our information page at http://www.ocslink.com/~morel/6497.html "Don't wash or soak any mushroom that you intend to dehydrate! Slice them in half and brush away any dirt or critters. You may string them and hang them in the sunshine or place them in a single layer between two screens and elevate them for air circulation in the sunshine. Use two screens so that with help you can pick them all up at onnce and turn them over. We have a dehydrator that provides both heat and circulation. Don't dry them until they are crispy like a potato chip, they should still be a little flexible. Remember that bigger, thicker mushrooms will take longer to dehydrate. Then we place them in an air tight baggie in the freezer, but you can store them anywhere they wont be found by critters. When you are ready to devour them, simply place them in water for 30 minutes to an hour and they're ready to use the same as if they were fresh. I like to take them right from the freezer and let them rehydrate as they are cooking in soup." I have changed my thinking since I wrote that article in '97. I now dry them until they are crisp. The problem is that with a dehydrator is that if you get the temperature too hot, you can actually "cook" the mushrooms so that they have a burnt taste. You can tell if the ones in your fridge are starting to spoil if they change color or get rust colored areas on them, if the water they're in turns briny (brown) or if mold or other growths appear on them. I would slice them in half because they will dehydrate better, you'll be able to get rid of any critters contained in them, make sure they are hollow, and look for any discoloration easier.
Mushrooms in Texas! Date: Sun, 18 Mar 2001 21:45:32 -0600. Grew up in southern
Illinois and hunted through childhood and into my mid twenties. Moved to
San Antonio in the early 80's and inquired about morels to the natives,
who looked at me like I was crazy. Well twenty years have gone by and today
while throwing some weeds in the wooded lot next to my house I find 21 beautiful
yellow morels. Dave F.
Morels. Date: Wed, 21 Mar 2001 14:23:48 -0600. I live in Austin, Texas and its March 21, 2001. Like most people I am a little scared to pick mushrooms myself and eat them. This morning I found a several Morels growing in my flowers beds. Thanks to your website I am confident they are Morels. I think I will go home today and pick them. I will cut them in halves and grill them. We bar-be-que everything in Texas. Reed M. Another great page for identification is Michael Kuo's
Morel sighting! Date: Mon, 26 Mar 2001 19:54:34 -0600. From: Sandy E. My boyfriend (who immediately identified them) and I found several " clumps" of morels on my property over the last couple of days. I live in Austin, Texas and we have had lots of rain lately and colder than normal temperatures. The morels seemed to be situated close to oak clusters, and we were also thinking about the proximity to the 'burn pile' where ash might fall on the area.
Fri, 6 Apr 2001 14:37:17 -0500. From: Sam G. March 16, 2001. Checked out one of our regular sites (central Texas) - listed by one of your more sharing reporters in her report - figuring we were a week early. This is a favorite spot for hunters on public land, first come, first serve, so to speak. Four years ago we collected hundreds of whites; three years ago, dozens; two years ago a few; last year, one. Went into the woods anyway and the ground was covered with literally thousands. No one had been in yet. We picked what we wanted, two hours with a lunch break one day and one hour the next, leaving thousands. Two of us cleaned five 64 quart Igloo coolers full. fifty years collecting, never seen anything like it. March 30, 2001. Last week to central Oklahoma and less luck on our two leases there (2 sections of woods), but at least two hundred pounds in four hours of hunting (six people) in the mud and water. All whites.
Morel Sighting. Date: Fri, 6 Apr 2001 15:37:17 -0500. Hello, I moved
to Texas from Iowa about a year ago, and have loved morel hunting for many
years. On Wednesday, April 4, my wife and I had a picnic at a park in central
Texas, and found an 8" morel popping out of the gravel near where
we parked our car. I was amazed!! We decided to take a hiking trail and
found two large grocery bags full in about 40 minutes just from the trail!
We couldn't believe people weren't out picking these things! To my surprise,
most of the Texans we asked about the mushroom said they never heard of
them. In fact, more than one person was surprised we were picking wild mushrooms
and cautioned us about eating them. I guess I can enjoy plenty of good harvests
in the years to come!! Sam Y. Temple, TX (50 miles north of Austin)
sighting report & ? Date: Sun, 06 May 2001 14:36:13 -0500. From: Tessa
N. North Texas- We found our first morel on April 7, and found more
on the 8th. Most of them were in clumps of two, but we found a cluster of
10 esculentas, in which we found one that was 9 inches in height (it was
so big it was bent over!). We only found 24 morels on our property, but
this is the most we've ever found on our own property since we moved to
Texas. April 7 is the day we have found morels here for the past 6 years.
I was wondering , have morels ever been found in May, in North Texas ? The
weather right now is cooler than usual here, and quite damp, and we were
considering going and looking for some today, just in case! We will be checking
this fall for morels, and will hopefully be lucky, and find some!

Virginia Morels! Date: Wed, 21 Mar 2001 16:13:45 -0500. Just got back from my favrite spot and lo and behold, I found 26 black and 6 yellow scrumptious goodies! I can't wait to cook them up. These were found this morning, but I got cut short by a severe rain storm. Checking the same spot tomorrow and will most likley find some more. Virginian's get your mesh bags ready to fill. I found these in the Newport News area. If anyone wants to know specifics, let me know and we can work it out. Can't wait till tomorow. Jody
Virginia Shrooms. Date: Thu, 22 Mar 2001 22:28:11 -0500. From: Jody from Newport News, Virginia again. Found 78 black and yellow this afternoon. The same spot I found them in yesterday, and I didn't even make it to my second spot which I will hit tomorrow, plus this same one again.
Virginia Shrooms! Date: Fri, 23 Mar 2001 15:45:12 -0500. I found another 66 blacks this morning (Friday). This spot is turning out to be a real good one this year. This is my last year here, so I think mother nature is being nice to me. I am drying a lot of them and freezing as well. Thanks again. Jody
Virginia Shrooms. Date: Tue, 27 Mar 2001 15:35:23 -0500. Well, 4 days in a row have yielded a harvest. 26 more black on Saturday, and then only 9 on Sunday. Looks like I need to wait for more rain which is due in the next couple days. Temps have dropped in the 30's, but Saturday it looks to get warmer. I got a hold of Clayton, and I told him my spot. Yes, I know, Morel hunters usually NEVER give out their hot spot, but I figure, he has been searching for a couple years with no results, and I have been finding them for 3 years. Now it is his turn to enjoy the tasty little buggers. Besides, I am leaving before next season, and decided he can take over my spot. I will update you after Saturday's hunt. Hopefully Clay will go with me, so we can find even more!! :-) Thanks. Jody, Newport News, VA.
Virginia Shrooms. Date: Mon, 2 Apr 2001 10:41:28 -0400. Well Tom, Saturday the 31st was a good day. Clay went with me to my spot and we did real well. I arrived about 45 minutes earlier than him, and had already found 20 or 30 blacks. We both hunted from 8am to noon and we both had some pretty good finds. I shared some of my find with him since he arrived a little later. I walked out of the woods with 87 blacks after giving Clay a couple handfuls. Not sure how many he ended up with, but I know he was VERY pleased. I think this was the first real find for him in Virginia. He was surprised as to the actual location of the shrooms and how early they were popping up. In places where you normally wouldn't even think of looking. The majority of the finds were located in Poplar Tree groves and even some in Oak Groves. The day was good and temp was in the 50's. It rained on Sunday, 1 April and I found 14 before I got rained out. I will keep you posted of the Virginia finds. Jody, Newport News, VA
Virginia. Date: Tue, 10 Apr 2001 11:52:35 -0400. Jody from Newport News again. Went out on 7 April and found 17 more black and 18 half free. Seems like the black ones should be going away soon, but hope not. Waiting for gray and yellows now. Still finding them in the Poplar and Oak groves. Jody
Virginia Morels. Date: Tue, 10 Apr 2001 22:33:36 -0400. Tom, Thanks to your site, I hooked up with a fellow shroomer out her in the peninsula of Southeast Virginia. In fact, we grew up no more than 60 miles from each other in Iowa. He took me to his Morel patch, and I have been in hog heaven since. The site keeps producing Morels every single day. First the blacks, then the half-free's then the grays and yellows. The last four times I've hunted, I have found all three varieties at once. We went out for a little over an hour today and I pulled 14, and I know he tripled that. The air temperature reached 79 yesterday and still there were fresh blacks to be had today. The best site is nestled amongst a stand of yellow poplars with a presence of sweetgum trees. The forrest floor will show poplar flower sheds and sweetgum prickley balls. We are also finding Morels in mixed hardwood stands with a blend of conifers. Two weeks ago, the ground temperature next to two morels was 49 degrees F. Down here, the Morels started to show long before the woods "came alive"; About the same time the Mayapples were sprouting. We are at the 39th parallel, and I know my buddy has been finding them since 21 March. One more note; Where there was an abundance of Early Spring Entolomas, there was an abundance of Morchella. Find the Fungus! Clay B. I'm glad we were able to help, but most of the credit should go to Jody for being willing to give you his spot.
Morel report--Emory, VA. Date: Mon, 16 Apr 2001 00:43:30 -0400. From: Gary A. From the height of the mayapples, and a few white trillium blooms, I would estimate that I'm out about a week earlier than usual. I found several black morels (probably elata, but who knows?) under maple and oak. They seemed to be several days old and varied in quality from good to a little "stinky." I don't eat the black ones. Under the stand of Hickories that has always been my most reliable place for little yellow morels, *I found none.* However, I did find at least 30 Verpa bohemica --many more than in past years. I don't eat those either. I haven't been to the apple orchards, since the "no trespassing" signs went up, but all of the best abandoned orchards are now very overgrown with raspberry thickets or are being subdivided, so I haven't seen big [8"x2"] yellow morels there for years anyway. You must have gotten there first! In a back yard in Abingdon, there is a often a very big black Morel (not out yet), that is shaped more like agusticeps or big yellow morels than the usual black ones. It is under an apple tree.
Virginia Shrooms. Date: Wed, 18 Apr 2001 08:17:40 -0400. Well, since I am writing I might as well tell you about my latest find. I know I post a lot of messages, but this season has been really exciting. I'm not as fortunate as other parts of the country where they walk out of the woods with 20 and 30 pounds of morels, but I get excited when I find the smallest ones. The weather here reached the mid 80's for a couple of days and I though it might be over real soon. That was 11 and 12 April. Well, on Easter Sunday, I went on my own type of Easter egg hunt. I guess you could call it an Easter Morel hunt! To my surprise I still found blacks in the same areas I have been finding them all season. I was thrilled. I also noticed that the later in the season, the larger the blacks become. One was the size of a soda can! I was only out for about and hour and a half, and returned home with 27. A combination of all three (black, gray, and yellow)! This is by far the best season I have had in Virginia. I think the season is winding down, and I will keep all parties informed of the latest finds. Signing off for now. Jody from Virginia.
04/21/01 Morel report--Emory, VA. Date: Sat, 21 Apr 2001 17:59:56 -0400. From: Gary A. Where I saw the 30 Verpa bohemica last weekend, those were nearly gone --dehydrating and starting get a bit of a black tone to the ribs and top. There were very few fresh Verpas [I don't eat those] . . .but a half dozen or so yellow morels, and no fresh black ones this week where I found the morchella elata. I bit farther away from where I usually find Verpa bohemica, I saw a morel looking mushroom that I first took for Morchella elata, **but** upon closer inspection it was half free, with small gap between the apparent cap and stype, the gap was slight and was very symmetrical to the shape of the stipe, I'll have to get a microscope to know more. Although still *fairly* moist and fresh, it's color was that of a black morel. The ones I have identified as Verpas can get a bit black with age, but this one is a mystery for now.
Fwd: update 04/21/01 Morel report--Emory, VA. Date: Sat, 21 Apr 2001 18:59:38 -0400. From: Gary A. Cutting the mystery half black morel lengthwise revealed that it was absolutely *not* a Verpa (which it didn't look like). Its cap was attached half to two-thirds down from its pointed tip. Some of the fresher more yellow half-free looking ones that I had dismissed today as aging Verpas (aging explaining how the ribs were starting to get black near the tip) left over from last week's big Verpa flush were also half-free morels. Cutting open one of last week's Verpa specimens stored in the fridge revealed that it's cap was attached very near the tip indicating that it was likely a verpa. Since I didn't apply that procedure to all of the 30 Verpas reported last week, it is plausible that at least some of them were half-free morels dismissed as Verpa bohemica identified earlier in the hunt. The hunt continues. I'm nearly in a frenzy.
SW Virginia Morel. Sun, 22 Apr 2001 08:50:39 -0400. You have a wonderful site and my family especially likes reading the sightings entries. We are in the far Southwest Virginia mountains near Wytheville. Morels generally spring about the last week in April around these parts. Happy to report that my son found a three inch yellow beauty yesterday. It's been quite dry and this was the only find during two hours of intense scouring. My guess is that next week will bring the treasure! DCS Wytheville, VA
Half-free Morels. Date: 22 Apr 2001 15:24:25 CDT. My wife, dog, and I found 23 half-free morels (snakeheads) today in the woods near our home in Fairfax County, Virginia. Size range was between 2-8 inches. Hopefully, this is an indication that the big sponges will follow! My wife is from Southern Indiana where morels are plentiful. So this was a big surprise to her since expectations were fairly low for this area. I will be checking back at the patch daily for the next several days to see how things are. RON
MOREL HUNTER. Date: Fri, 27 Apr 2001 11:03:09 EDT. I need some help. I am in Newport News, VA and I attempting to make contact with Jody who is finding these roonies! I went out today and found none, if Jody could provide me a hint or a close location that would be outstanding. I am from Indiana and I have not had any roonies in a long time. Please help me so I can satisfy my taste buds. Appreciate your help! John John, you are the fifth person that wants to make contact with Jody. He has been very gracious and has even given his favorite spot to Clay. We have forwarded all emails to Jody, but please understand if he doesn't respond.

Here @ Lynden, Washington. Date: Mon, 09 Apr 2001 22:21:49 -0700. Hi my name is Jenny R.. My son (Sean) and I went for an outing today while on our walk, I happened to look over and there and behold I saw a morel mushroom. I showed my son so we went to look around for more, wow oh wow there were tons of them (figure of speech). We collected quite a few morel mushrooms. I was excited because I never saw so many morel mushrooms in one area while my son and I collected them. There was just so many!! Our biggest heading (the brainy part) was at least 3 inches without the stem from top to bottom and the width was at least 2 inches. My son and I had a very adventurous walk today. I would like more info. on Morel mushrooms for around here in the Whatcom County area.
Morels. Date: Tue, 10 Apr 2001 03:13:42 -0700. From: Jeremy F. Morels are finally coming up in washington. Found about a half pound in the usually sparse west side of the cascades. I found them in cottonwood stands in the hills around north bend. Verpas have been slow to grow due to the cold weather, but are certainly around in good numbers at lower elevations. The snow and cold weather hopefully will help out with drought conditions and low snow pack. Also if any of you texan pickers need to find a home for all those morels e-mail me please.
Fort Lewis, WA checking in. Date: Sat, 14 Apr 2001 17:53:09 -0700. I am 29 years old and found my first Morel. I nearly fainted. It was so exiting. Just wanted someone to know. I found it in the woods at Fort Lewis, WA right in the middle of a very busy mountain bike trail. Go figure. Thanks for the recipes. Jodi
Early morels (Verpa bohemica) Date: Wed, 18 Apr 2001 21:42:35 -0700. From: John H. April 15, 2001. Early Morels are still out in the lower Green river area. If you can eat them, go for it. Does anyone have hints or reports on true morels (Morchella sp) in Wash?
Sightings. Date: Mon, 23 Apr 2001 08:58:48 -0700. I found 3 Morel mushrooms over the weekend in a woodsy area in Mount Vernon, WA, on April 22. I used to hunt Morels with my father in Oklahoma when I was young, but I am new to Washington, and new to having to find them on my own (without my father taking me right to them). I know there has to be more around that same area. I would love some pointers and where and when to look. I love to eat morels and miss the family gatherings we used to have every spring to feast on our findings. Julie W.
Bellingham morels. Date: Thu, 26 Apr 2001 17:42:08 +0800. I currently live in Bellingham, Wa and am very interested in learning how to find morels in this area. Is there anyone out there that would be willing to take me on a trip or offer advice of where to look(type of tree's, terrain, etc. Thank you, Mike
Morel report. Date: Mon, 7 May 2001 19:16:26 -0700. From: Robert J. To guy asking about true morels (Morchella species) in Washington, they are out there. Been finding them for 20+ years on east slopes of Cascades. Think areas like Cle Elum, or Lake Wenatchee. Look for cottonwoods growing near water as prime target zones. Within that environment, search areas with little/no undergrowth and a ground cover of fallen, dead cottonwood leaves. The little darlings are exceedingly hard to see, but become easier to spot with experience. Typing this on May 7th, having within the last hour brought back 4 pounds of black morels from Cle Elum area. Good luck.

Morels in WV! Date: Sat, 14 Apr 2001 16:41:02 -0400. This is Curtis from the southern part of WV. Just got back from tripping through the woods for 4 miles and found 5 mushrooms. That's 2 more than my neighbor found and 1 more than his buddy found. The weather has been ideal for the last 2 weeks, temps have been in the 70's and 80's with moderate rainfall. Hopefully the next time out will be better, probably not next week though suppose to have snow showers. Keep on shrooming!!!

West Virginia. Date: Tue, 24 Apr 2001 21:36:36 EDT. Found my first West Virginia morels today, April 24. Two keepers and three that I left to grow. All found under an older live cherry tree. Also found five half frees under a tulip poplar. I was starting to wonder if there were morels in this state after leaving my proven sights unattended in Illinois this past summer. It is almost heaven here now!! Bopper!!
morels of course. Date: Tue, 15 May 2001 11:21:58 -0600. Hi there fellow morel lover! I am wondering if your still into gathering info on morels. I live in WV, and I found the first morel this year on Friars Hill, on April 11th while digging ramps. We have had a dry spring, and the season seems to have ended prematurely. We hardly found any, compared to last year that is. We found morels everywhere! I mean literally, popping up out of the crushed limestone on the edges of our remote mountain roads!!! I simply could not believe my eyes. In Michigan, we had to dig through leaves, and had only one major find. Last year, here in WV, we had so many morels we got sick of them. What was I thinking??? I should have kept gathering, and dried them. I guess I thought the season would always be like that, boy was I wrong. I am wondering if the season has been affected on a widespread basis? I agree with your assertion that morels do indeed GROW, as I had heard the popping out of the soil fully grown theory. I find that ludicrous, and I have proven to myself and my husband that morels do grow. Like anything that I have seen coming from the dirt, the rate of growth depends heavily on the weather. Keep up the good work, and happy morel hunting, if not til next year. Niki M.

what else ? Mushrooms. Date: Thu, 12 Apr 2001 16:22:16 -0500. Tom, I read your peice today about following the season north, and I wanted to tell you that I live between Eagle River and Boulder Junction, WI. I always come to the Sparland, Chillicothe, Edelstein areas to hunt mushrooms as I grew up in Chillicothe. Do you know anyone who actually hunts mushrooms in northern Wi.? I don't know anyone that does. Last year while driving down a logging road I found 8 morels in the middle of the road probably late may, early june. There are no elm trees in this area, although a friend of mine has a hunting shack in Glidden about 65 miles west and he thinks he has elm trees in the area. I will be checking this out this year. I usually come down and hunt the week before your championship, so I don't get over to your area even though I drive right by your house sometimes, but usually I drive 17. Tell your sister Ann and everybody that remembers Rick and Debbie from Chillicothe and Sparland Hi! Happy Easter To everyone and please lots of mushrooms this year!!!!!!!! Rick.
Wisconsin Sighting! Date: Wed, 18 Apr 2001 04:02:58. From: brett w. The Morelmasters of Wisconsin have finally found a few morels!! Hey it's not fair all of you guys South of us find morels before us!! It was painful reading those first findings from other States the last couple of weeks. This morning here in Southwest Wisconsin we woke up to a light dusting of snow on the ground. By afternoon the snow had melted and I decided to go check a South facing slope. I couldn't believe my eyes at first but there was 3 very small morels peaking out of the moss. I'm talking like not even as tall as a dime. Wisconsin hunters can look for prime season to be roughly 3 weeks away!! We will have pictures of these little morels and the tree they were found under on our website in a few days. You are welcome to view them at www.angelfire.com/wi/morelmaster Again thanks to Morel Mania for this website.
Morel Sighting in Wisconsin! Date: Thu, 19 Apr 2001 11:58:50 -0500. A short trip to the woods last night (April 18th) resulted in second sighting of the famous Morchella in Southwestern Wisconsin near Potosi. (We did spot a grouping of 3 gray caps in the evening hours of April 17th in a ditch line facing due south.) A projected outlook of the season looks very promising at this point. We have adequate amounts of ground moisture and the Dutch Elm Disease spread like wild-fire through the area last summer, resulting in an abundance of elm trees that recently died off. With a little assistance from Mother Nature, we will be in prime-time hunting the week of May 7th and May 14th. Happy & Safe hunting to all! Brett
1st morel. Date: Mon, 23 Apr 2001 20:42:11 -0500. From: Tim K. Sat. April 21 south facing limestone bluff in Rock County, WI. Several dozen are up. Some 3 inches tall may have been up a few days others just up!
Morels are up in Southeastern Wisconsin! Date: Thu, 26 Apr 2001 09:03:59 -0500. Morels are up in Southeastern Wisconsin! On Wednesday April 25, I found 7 Morchella Esculenta in Washington County. They were growing on a southern facing slope next to a dead elm stump. The largest one was about 2 inches tall. I checked all of the other southern slopes in the area with dead elms but nothing yet. The morels I found were in an open area that didn't have much grass or moss to shade the ground. The weather is supposed to be warmer over the next week. I'm sure more will start popping up real soon. Hey Brett, what happened to your web site? Erik
MORELS SIGHTING. Date: Mon, 7 May 2001 17:17:44 EDT. Monday June 7th 2001. I just got back from my favorite Morel Hunting ground near Westfield WI. The weather has been a little cool but there had been over four inches of rain last week. I managed to come out of the woods with about three dozen small to medium sized grays. I think the yellows should start popping up in the next week or two. TGA
Can we buy them. Date: Wed, 16 May 2001 12:19:18. From: brett w in SW WI. Hey Tom, Thanks for the lead. We've contacted Roger to let him know we are unable to ship any more fresh morels this season. (Dang sun!) Actually, we can not complain. Our season was one of the best. Final numbers are not tallied yet, but I know we came close to the 300 pound picking mark. We also took two days in the heart of the season to do some guided hunts and help Larry Lonik out with a video he's putting together.
once again! Date: Wed, 30 May 2001 17:48:18. Hello Tom and Vicky, The season in sw Wisconsin ended on May 17th this year. Jason and I picked well over 275 pounds (close to 300, but we got lazy towards the end of the season:) Larry Lonik stopped in and hunted a couple of days with us (May 7th and 8th) after leaving the Magnolia festival. He really enjoyed the hunts, as we averaged 30 pounds a day. We would have undoubtly got more, but Larry slowed us up a bit:) Don't let him tell ya otherwise...... We did break a copule of Morelmaster records this season. "Most pounds in a day". Previous mark was set in 1998 at 41.5 pounds. We thrashed through the underbrush all day on May 9th and picked a grand total of 44 pounds. Previous record for "Most pounds under a tree" was set last season (2000) at 10.5 pounds. This year we cleared 14 pounds of morels under one elm tree on May 6th. Hope the season in central IL was as good as ours and as always, Happy Shrooming! Brett Thanks for the info Brett, I met up with Larry at Boyne City and saw the raw footage of some of your hunts - simply amazing! He hopes to have the video avaliable this fall, if so, we'll have it in our next catalog.

Hello Fellow Morel Hunters. Date: Mon, 7 May 2001 01:26:17 -0500 (CDT). From: Dave S. I have been hunting the elusive morel for thirty seven years now. I can't believe that there is a website for this! The way that I discovered this was, I was out in a woods today, I ran into a friend that told me about this site, she had looked it up on the net. She and her 4th grade son where coming out of the woods defeted, but I took them back in and shared my secrects with them. We all came out victorious, so proud to come out with everyone gong in or coming out empty handed!. You know the pride of all our expertise. When asked you are to give the response, where did you find those? In a woods! I figure I won't be around forever, and young people should learn the art of finding morels. I've been doing it for many years now, and I only take a taste of them when they first come out. Then my goal is to find them for the shut -ins and folks that can't go out and find them anymore. These folks had them once upon a time, and to take the mushrooms to them, is about the most rewarding expierience in the world. The smiles you see, when handing them a bread wrapper full of morels, is the most genuine smile that one could ever see! I took them to my third grade teacher for years, ever since I was at the third grade level, even the years that I lived in Minnesota, She and her husband passed away, lost me there as to who I was going to give them to, but trust me, I will find deserving people! Thank You again for having this website
