Very late to find the first morel but hopefully more to come. Jim H., Boone County, Arkansas

3/28/2010
I found 2 Grey Morel Mushrooms growing next to a dead elm tree on March 28th. I found alive and dead yellows in the same spot last year around April 5th, so I decided to show up a little early this year. We have had lots of rain and will be in the upper 70's the rest of the week so my 2 Grey's I left growing in the woods should have some siblings when I go back to check on them this weekend! Happy hunting to all!!! ~Shane

Hope the picture comes out. Found most of these Sunday on top of north facing hills in North East Grundy County. Found a little of all kinds. Found some fresh greys on flat well shaded marsh land. Hoping to find more this weekend on the lower hill sides. Didn't find any this past weekend there. Have always found them in the past. ~Bill and Stephanie

Here's a few pics from our 43rd Annual Kinsella Mushroom Fry. We had about 50 people attend and we ate 139 mushrooms in short order. This was the worst morel season any of us can remember but we still had a great time with good friends, good food, and beer. ~Larry, in Fairview Heights, IL

5/2/2010

4/30/2010
Central Illinois report. By now most realize this will not be a bumper crop year (Except for a few lucky individuals). I haven't had a lot of time to check out the patches, but did take two guests and found about 1.5 lbs. on Wednesday morning in about 2.5 hours. Fresh grays from the bottom of the north facing slopes to about half way up the slope. The mature yellows were about a third of the way from the top.

This afternoon I took a ten minute walk to check a few elms I've been watching from afar all season and did find three nice sized yellows. Meanwhile, my son, Jesse (pictured) found 1 lb. 8 oz. in a couple of hours. Again, everything is on the north slopes and in the shade. We are in the latter part of the season. Those hot days in early May and the lack of rain caused our predicament. More rain coming tonight, but it may not help in that the morels already up will get waterlogged.

An experienced hunter from the Cham-bana area says this is his worst season ever. Morel University is tomorrow, May 1. I'm glad we didn't schedule it a week later. Reports from MU tomorrow. ~Tom Nauman

4/30/2010
Well, our season is over and it was the worst mushroom season I've ever had. I picked 139 of the little buggers. My previous wort year was 2006 with only 220 shrooms. My normal year is 1,000 to 2,000. Our mushroom fry is Sunday and we'll have to ration the mushrooms but we always have plenty of pork steaks, chicken and brats, not to mention all the other food our guests bring. It's just a shame we couldn't have had more shrooms. Well, like the St. Louis Rams say, "It'll be a better year next year". ~Larry, in Fairview Heights, IL

4/29/2010
Found 8 grays today in Woodstock, McHenry County.  3 were very dry. ~Joy

4/28/2010
I found these 10 morels last night. If you look close you can see about 6 are grays and 4 are yellows. The grays are almost 6 inches tall! They are bigger than the yellows. I wish I had a better camera than my phone but it is what it is. Also found about 20 on Monday the 26th. Mostly yellows ranging from 4 to 8 inches…couples huge ones….also a few nice 4 to 5 inch grays. Season going pretty well thanks to that rain all last weekend. Hope it keeps on going. Going to go hunting tonight after work again. ~Doug

4/27/2010

Found a dozen little greys in Kane county on the 20th, and then scouted three other sites with no luck. Have been waiting for rain for two weeks! ~Sara

4/20/2010
Central IL near Pekin, Tazewell County: I went out last night and found 17 mushrooms, bout 14 of them were yellows, very fresh, new, and size is getting better. Some were over 4 inches tall. Not many grays though. Last week they were all around 2 to 2.5 inches. The rain coming this weekend could help a lot as the numbers aren’t great but it’s so dry out there. ~Doug

4/20/2010
Found these in deep valleys where everything hadn't dried out as much as the rest of the woods. Naturally, I didn't take pictures of the dried out ones. They rehydrated well, however. ~Larry, in Fairview Heights, IL

4/18/2010
Found these today. The fresh ones are from an elm in a deep valley where it stays wet. The four together are from a mid-hill with a slightly eastern exposure. It shows that we really need rain. I'm afraid even a heavy rain won't be enough to save this terrible season. ~Larry, in Fairview Heights, IL.

4/18/2010
We found 30 greys and 1 yellow today in Ogle County. Most were found under dead elms, but we did find some under some dead pines and may apples. This is the earliest we have ever found morels.Happy Hunting! ~Fred, Joe, and Walt

4/16/2010
Hi, Tom! Pastor Steve and I went out this morning in the Kankakee area, and we found 16 morels in the 1.5 to 2.5 inch range. They are lovely greys, and with this gentle rain we're having there are surely lots more to come. Have a great season, everybody!! ~Martina

4/15/2010
Vicky and I went for a walk in the woods this evening. And, she's the champ for today. I found one small gray with pits still closed and one 3 inch yellow on separate elm trees. Vicky got about a pound of grays and yellows around a massive cottonwood tree that had some dead limbs, but otherwise looked healthy, and a few more mature yellows (open pits) in some scrub trees. The cottonwood was in the bottom of the valley at the south edge of the timber. Scrub trees were on a south facing slope. Hopefully the heat wave is over for awhile. Locally we got 2/10ths of an inch of rain overnight with cooler temperatures predicted. Northern Indiana fared a little better in that Alex B., the Mad Russian, sent me a text message that it was raining cats and dogs in Ft. Wayne this afternoon. I'm concerned that the heat wave may have hurt our season in that we're finding mature yellows earlier this year than we've even found small grays in other years. Time will tell. The green stuff is rapidly covering the forest floor and the morels there will be hard to find. Slopes should be okay as foliage grows less thick there. Gotta go, Vicky's frying 'em up! ~Tom Nauman

4/15/2010
Went last Thursday April 15, 2010 in central IL near Pekin, found 20 mushrooms, maybe 2 yellows among the rest grays. Tallest was about 2.5 inches with the rest smaller than that. Very dry, we need rain bad! Seems to just be starting but the dry ground and coming foliage may make it a lousy year. The early heat of 80s and constant 30+ mph winds have really dried up most places to where the dust is flying. ~Doug

4/15/2010
Small greys April 15 th very few though, just starting

4/15/2010
Went out for over 4 hours today and found only 13 shrooms. 11 grays and 2 yellows. Here's some of the grays. ~Larry, in Fairview Heights IL.

4/14/2010
H-Mae and CJ stumbled upon a patch of 20, somewhere between Lake Michigan and the Shawnee Nation Forest. The kids are too young to post their own pictures, but old enough to know not to tell anyone where the “fatty wow- wows” are :^) We are so excited for a little rain and a long weekend of gathering….. Happy Hunting to all! ~Bode

4/11/2010
Terrible picture of delicious morels. Picked 54 between 1.25” and 2.5” inches on 4-11-10. We went out and found them on the 10th, I wanted to let them go to pick them about twice the size they were but we could not do it. We left behind at least 40 under an inch.

Found in northern Whiteside County. I have never picked any here before the 17th and usually not before the 24th of April. They promptly became a main ingredient to homemade cream of asparagus morel soup. Phenomenal! ~Bill H.

4/10/2010
Hi! I wanted to let you know that I found around 15 little gray morels on 4/10/10, in Fulton Co., IL. This is definetly the earliest I have found them here. The last 3 years the first ones I found were on 4/20. So maybe this will be a record year! (if we can find them before the grass, etc. gets too tall!) :) ~Lisa

4/12/2010
I took a walk in the mushroom patch in Putnam County this afternoon and found two gray morels. 2" and 1" tall. Vicky's brother, Mike found one on Thursday, 04/08/10 in Marshall County. Conditions are dry and we need some rain. Temperatures are predicted to be in the low 80's through Thursday. Rain is not predicted until Friday (scattered thunderstorms). The foliage is going to be a problem in the lowlands as the green stuff is growing rapidly and will make the morels difficult to see there. Mike and I were at the Deer & Turkey Classic in Madison, WI this weekend. We had a great time and made a lot of new friends. Someone there told us that Sunday's newspaper had a report and picture of a morel being found. ~Tom Nauman

4/11/2010
Found on Southern Illinois University property near Edwardsville, IL on 4/11/10 ~Jamie

4/11/2010
Morels found by brandon in marseilles (lasalle county)today sunday the 11th! i have one spot near town that produces early every year . usually i get there and some of them are old . so this year i looked there first and i found these near 2 trees on a hill facing the south that stays wet all the time and also gets decent sun. the earliest i have ever found them before was on the 13th. forcast is 70s all week but no rain. not good but it will be a verry early year. one last note one of the shrooms i picked today had a orange stem and was getting old already so i figure it was 5 days or so old. the others were fresh. ~Brandon

Easter Sunday, April 4, 2010, my early season opener hot spot produced in St. Clair County once again without fail. One little 3/4 inch grey. Interesting thing, I found 3 more 3/4 inchers and one 1 incher nearby at a spot which more often kicks in a week after the season opener spot, the 1 incher is a little dry on top, probably an April 1st emergence give or take a day. ~Rick R.

Michigan

5/9/2010
I spent the weekend in Northeast Michigan. Picked a couple of pounds in a snowstorm on Saturday. Found verpas, half-frees, blacks, whites, and gyromitras. Looks like Boyne City could have a bumper crop for the festival this weekend.

Travel notes for those headed to Boyne City: If driving from the southwest, don't go north toward Holland at the I-94/I-196 intersection. I-196 is closed in Grand Rapids and you have to detour 7 miles south on 131, make a u-turn and then go north on 131. Instead, stay on I-94 east to 131 north near Kalamazoo.

131 is closed north of Cadillac. The detour will take you east on M-55 to M-66 north. M-66 will intersect with 131 at Kalkaska. Hope to see you there. ~Tom Nauman

5/7/2010
Alex B, Tom L, & myself are spending the weekend at the Turtle Lake Club in northest Michigan, Lots of mature blacks, and fresh whites. Thanks to our hosts who carry a 44 to scare away bears! We've seen three so far. ~Robert S.

5/4/2010
SE Michigan: Found about 60 over two days but was behind others who scored much more. Size of my thumb to nice ones.

Question... I'm a rookie and stumbled on about 50-60 morels in the woods along my street. I only found a few yesterday after seing some strangers coming out of the woods with 3 bags full. I didn't even know they were growing near me. I ate them the same night and went to bed happy and couldn't wait to head out the next morning to find more. I was lucky to find an area that the others missed and found maybe 40 today but my little honey hole is now all but dried up.

Ok, I have the bug bad and will be looking for other places now, but.. Will more grow in this same spot this spring or it a one pick harvest? I was hoping with some luck with the weather and some rain that maybe another batch wil pop in a week or so. Am i dreaming or is this a reality (possibility) ? Thanks for your thoughts on this. ~Dave

Response from Tom@Morelmania: Hi Dave, it is possible that there will be more. It is all dependent on Mother Nature and Father Time. I have seen it happen. That's the reason that we encourage mushroom pickers to cut or tear the stem above ground. I'll explain in the next issue of the Morel Booster. ~Tom Nauman, Morel Mania, Inc.

Was road hunting today, a little sore from the previous days of hunting. Hit some trees I spotted from the road, & found 37. It can be a rewarding day sometimes by spotting trees from the truck, & finding Shrooms. Last year I found 42 GIANT Goldens by 1 tree, & this year only 8 good grays by that same tree. It’s Prime Time now & I’m having a blast & covering a lot of ground!! My buddy Ron found 23 also on his own. So far, So GOOD!! ~Bill the MUSHROOMHEAD From: Hastings- Minnesota.

4/26/2010
253 found today! Yee-Haw! It was myself, Kari, & my buddy Ron. A lot of goldens this time, & less grays. Kari was beyond herself because she found more then me. She’s getting to be quite the Shroom hunter, & really gets excited when she strikes GOLD!! Kari had 88, Ron had 80, I had 85. That was about a 3&1/2 hour trip. A beautiful find, if I don’t say myself!! ~Bill the MUSHROOMHEAD From: Hastings- Minnesota.

4/25/2010
The (misses) Kari, & I found 145 today, 65% grays, 35% goldens. Got our rain yesterday, & a bit today Found them in about 3 hours, good hunt! ~Bill the MUSHROOMHEAD From: Hastings- Minnesota.

Ever since I was fascinated with wild mushrooms, I have always wanted to see a morel up close and personal.  Well, after waiting for 11 years I have finally found one, by accident.  What's interesting about this find was that it's right in our own front yard.  I was so excited I had to share the experience with my husband. The morel was the size of a quarter, found in seacoast NH. ~Nora

W e were visiting friends in austin, texas , (we are from iowa) and found forty grays on the 17 of march .our friends were very excited they had never been shrooming before , but will probably go to this spot again, we were all just out for a hike on a wonderful day when my 17year old son says well what do you know , me having been 2 steps ahead of him turns around and there were 2 grays directly between us .the race to find more, in an area we didnt know, was on.the rest as they say is history. having just checked out your website i thought other shroomers would like to know that the 2010 morel season has begun. ~Daron in southern iowa

Went out again on Wednesday the 5th and found another 16 in Eastern Portage County, Wis. I must have missed them first time around because they were all large and looked to have been there a few days. I did not find anything smaller or any that looked liked they were new. I hope the season wasn't a "one and done". The picture is of a pair I found at my house in my tulip bed! Gonna eat them tonight with ramps and asparagus tips on pasta. ~Brian

Found 13 on Southern exposed hills , all about 3-4 inches tall  . Poor year. Farmer across the way on Northern exposed hills found about 70  , last year they found 300-400. We found 100-150. To much heat and dryness early in the spring. At least I didn't step on any . ~Gord

Wood county, Wisconsin. Sorry for the late posting. Found 18 (1.5") grays on the first day out on Saturday (May 1) on sunny side of a creek in Wood county. Surprised to find 27 (2") yellows Tuesday (May 4) by a dead elm and another 31 grays and yellows (all 1.5"-3") by ash on south facing hill! Pretty fast start, Nothing small. ~Bob

I found about 3 pounds of huge yellows on Saturday, April the 30th in Eastern Portage County, Wisconsin. Upon returning from “my patch” I also found 95 more in an area of woods just in front of my house that extended into my lawn (see picture) and I have never found them there. I see that others think this morel season is shaping up to be less than stellar, and because of our lack of precipitation I would have agreed, but this years start almost 10 days earlier than 2009 makes me think otherwise. I will hunt again most days this week and hope things progress – more sightings posts will follow! Happy hunting to all. ~Brian

We live near Elko, British Columbia, Canada, in the Rockies near Fernie. Yesterday, April 3rd, and Today, April 4th,my husband found 15 black morels beside our driveway, on our acreage. We have had a warm, dry winter, which is probably why we are seeing morels a month or more earlier than usual. ~Charlotte & Ken

Hello Tom, Yesterday Apr. 28 in sandy areas along the shores of lake Ontario, Canadian side, we picked the first collection of Morchella esculenta, some were 4 inches tall. There has not been rain for long time now otherwise the season would be in full bloom. Best of luck to all. ~GLUE

From The Netherlands, Yesterday the rain, TODAY THIS PICTURE!!! GREETINGS ~GIO.

4/17/2010
This picture is of a morel I found last year on the Dutch Coast. This year is too dry for morels. ~Gio

Response from Teresa: I think the photo posted 4/17 from the Netherlands is a false morel. Hope they didn't eat it.

Response from Tom@Morelmania: Hi Teresa, the mushroom pictured is a Morchella semilibera. It's commonly known as the Half-free morel or "peckerhead". It is a true morel, edible, and delicious. See Michael Kuo's page:<http://www.mushroomexpert.com/morchella_half-free.html>
