We are experiencing what could be the best season since 2003 - maybe even better. Notice  Wes' Tennessee posting from April 17, "128 greys and small whites, 107 blacks and 6 giant whites".  Then take a look at the post from Toronto on April 19 - 10 elata (black morels). Tennessee and Toronto  are ~350 miles apart in latitude. And black morels are everywhere in-between. Noted that the TN report  was at 2000 feet. The logic? It's staying cool. The heat spell during the first week of April had us worried, but  temperatures are perfect now with lots of moisture. Enjoy, we deserve it after last year. ~Tom@Morel Mania.

Drove from Denver to Trenton on April 26th where we and our 2 granddaughters found 3lbs of mushrooms.  Good sized ones but were in the open area where the sun hit.  Was still a little cool if the sun would just come out they would start popping. ~Floyd

We found 2 dozen morels (yellows) on state park property yesterday 5-16-11..Although half were drying out on the ground already , we came across a sporadic patch that had the tallest fresh ones we've ever seen . the largest one of 4 was 9 inches tall. The other 3 were over 6 inches. I was thinking with the high heat we had last week that the shrooms were done , i guess I was pleasingly wrong. ~Chuck

I just happened to see today's Chicago Tribune *Morel of the Week compared in size to a Coors Light can....Low and behold upon harvesting Lily of the Valley blooms in an old bird sanctuary plot in Hinsdale, IL--there was the most beautiful specimen--easily 4". I carefully cut the stem above ground, came immediately home to search online for confirmation, education, safety and preparation techniques. I learned how to be sure it is not a false morel (beautiful, hollow stem as opposed to one with 'cotton-ball substances in the stem.'). I am still not sure I trust cooking and eating--may just dry it to save as a trophy.  Now I will be on the lookout as conditions seem perfect after this awful, dreary, rain-soaked cool weekend comes to an end.* *Thank you for your site--very fun and informative. Wish I had a picture for you--but I will continue the hunt. MorelMania has set in the western suburbs of Chicago!* ~Paula

Went Morel hunting my first time  yesterday. We got about 18 Morels in Willow Springs IL near 104th & Archer. Also got ticketed $75 by forest preserve. I guess they don't allow Morel hunting in Cook county. Will have to read up on Will county. ~Mike

Response from Tom @ Morelmania
HI Mike, Sorry about the ticket from the forest preserve. Must have been an over-zealous officer. You are the first person I've ever heard of to get a ticket. Usually the offender is simply asked or told to stop. All forest preserves in Illinois have this rule, but I know there are a lot of people that hunt them. It is legal to hunt in the state parks and some conservation areas. See the archives from May of 2005: < http://www.morelmania.com/5Mushrooms/article0505.html> ~Tom @ Morelmania

Hello Tom, It has been several years since I have written and I apologize   for that.  I just wanted to let you know that we are still finding Morels   here in Southern Illinois!  The true Giants (Morchella Crassipes) are   showing up. My previous record for finding these giants was May 9th and I am   hoping to beat that date this year. Meanwhile my son who is a great mushroom   hunter has had a fantastic year. He sold over 35lbs to Tom's restaurant on  US  51 North. He has found over 75lbs by himself this year. Angusticeps were   unbelieveable this year accounting for most of the weight. Anyway, just  wanted  to let you know that I truly respect what you have done for the sport of  morel  hunting and hope you keep up the good work. I enjoy  your emails and   newsletter, please keep me on your list. Best WIshes ~Bob

Dear Shrooms, I never realized there was an organization for morels or records being kept. But just for the record, I  have been harvesting mushrooms in my "in town" backyard for the past thirty five years. This year I  found 31 mushrooms varying in size from golfball size to baseball size. I would have had three more  but I stepped on them at dusk investigating if the mushrooms had come up yet. Next year I will wait  for daylight to do my investigation. I harvested these mushrooms in approximately 30 minutes. I had  already given many of the large ones to my friends and neighbors at the time the picture was taken. (I think they spy on me this time of year.)  Approximately 10 years ago I cut 121 mushrooms from my  backyard, which filled two grocery bags to their tops. Here is the weird part; they grow in an area of approximately 20 feet by 50 feet. Sometimes they appear in clumps of two and three. The area lies between two large Ash trees and next to my four feet wide  x four feet high x 20 feet long pile of Elm firewood.  I do not cut the grass in this area until the mushrooms come up and are harvested. Nor do I use any fertilizers or weed killers in this area ever. So there are the facts. Vive la morel, ~James A.,  Monroe County, IL No address because, as I have been warned, "Never tell anyone where you can find Morels"

5/2/2011
We are from The Bloomington- Normal area.  We have had one of the best years finding mushrooms.  Same good spots and old spots produced mushrooms this year. Weather has been great for looking.  Fellow shroomers have had a good year. Nothing is better than a shroom dipped in egg and then cracker crumbs and fried in oil and butter mix. ~L&M

Hello Tom, My name is Chester. I live in Buckhannon, West Virginia. I saw the pic from4/4/11 this is  not the first sighting here. My grandfather and I hunt these mushrooms, and have been for a few years.  Before I started he has done it his whole life. There are a lot of them here, however they are very  difficult to find. Today I was out for 4 hours and found one, reason being an older relative knows all the  spots I go and he beat me too them. It is something the family does. we have found morels that weigh 1  to 2 pounds here. Anyways just thought id let you know, Happy hunting. ~Chester
